"Outcast Ashley" is the second segment of the fifteenth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

When Ashley A. is kicked out of the Ashleys for forgetting the tradition of Purple Day, she befriends Gretchen, with disastrous results from T.J. and the gang.

Plot[]

Gretchen comes to school covered with a box which is supposed to be a pinhole viewer for the upcoming eclipse. The Gang try to get her past the Ashleys who are dressed in purple and waiting for Ashley A. to show up. After the girls mock Gretchen, they see Ashley A. arrive in her car, only to see that she has forgotten to wear purple that day. The girls worship Purple Day as it was the day where all four of them met, but seeing that Ashley A. forgot about it, she is kicked out of the Ashleys group and forced to go elsewhere. She attempts to befriend other students, until she runs into Gretchen, who was recently dropped by the rest of the Gang for not understanding her project.

Gretchen and Ashley A. end up becoming friends with one another and work together to complete the pinhole viewer. Soon Gretchen and Ashley A. combine their styles together. The Gang try to talk Gretchen out of hanging out with Ashley A. but she rebuffs them after pointing out that none of them had showed the slightest bit of interest in her work or cared. Meanwhile, the rest of the Ashleys begin to spy on them and approach Gretchen and try to talk her away from Ashley A. by pointing out of the similarities they have with one another. Despite Ashley A.'s attempts to get rid of them, Gretchen seems taken by the Ashleys.

Gretchen completes her pinhole viewer, but is caught in the middle of a fight between Ashley A. and the rest of the Ashleys, resulting in her pinhole viewer getting destroyed. The Ashleys collectively balk at it and realize that they still have a lot in common and re-recruit Ashley A. back into their club. Gretchen tells the Gang that she was sorry for ditching them and that she was caught up in Ashley A.'s habits that she loved the idea of being popular for once. Just then, the eclipse happens. As Gretchen sulks over her destroyed pinhole viewer, the Gang reveal that they built another one for her and they all enjoy seeing the eclipse together.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • Gretchen's birthday is mentioned as being March 23, making her an Aries. Ashley Q. is a Leo and Ashley A. is a Gemini.
  • The last episode to feature Ross Malinger as T.J. before getting replaced by Andrew Lawrence.
  • Gretchen claims that she has to wait 122 years for the next eclipse. An unusual claim as eclipses happen every 18 months.
