The area opened as Pacific Wharf in 2001 along with the rest of the theme park as part of a subsection of a larger land Golden State, which also included two other neighboring lands, Grizzly Peak and Condor Flats. It was designed to look like an old Californian fishing port and primarily consists of restaurants. The "Golden State" name was retired and the three sections were broken off into their own separate lands in 2012, as part of the park's redesign.
At D23 Expo 2022, Disney Parks chairman Josh D'Amaro announced that the area is planned to be re-themed to San Fransokyo Square, inspired by San Fransokyo.
