Passamaquoddy is a location featured in the 1977 Disney live action/animation hybrid film Pete's Dragon. It is a small seaside fishing town located in Maine and named after the Native American Indian tribe and bay of the same name.

Appearance[]

In the film, Passamaquoddy is the town where the main characters, Pete and Elliott, a young orphan boy and his invisible dragon friend, arrive after escaping from the abusive Gogan family, who claim to have bought him as a slave. However, Elliott's clumsiness causes trouble for Pete, who is labeled as a source of bad luck by the superstitious townsfolk. The only people who befriend Pete are Nora and Lampie, a lighthouse keeper's daughter and father, who offer him food and shelter at Passamaquoddy Light. Surrounded by hills, forests, and the sea, the town is depicted as a quaint and picturesque town, with a covered bridge, a town hall, a tavern, a schoolhouse, and various shops and houses.

Passamaquoddy is also the destination of Dr. Terminus and Hoagy, a pair of con artists who sell fake medicines and potions to unsuspecting customers. Dr. Terminus has visited the town before but was chased away by the angry residents. He returns with a new scheme, hoping to capture Elliott and use his body parts for various cures. He sings a song called "Passamaquoddy" to persuade the townspeople to buy his products and invest in his plans.

Trivia[]

  • The lighthouse scenes were filmed on a rocky point at Morro Bay, California.
    • A set was constructed there for the film, though Disney had to obtain permission from the Coast Guard to use the lamp from the lighthouse.
    • The rest of the town was filmed on the Walt Disney Studios backlot, where the standing sets were redressed extensively to recreate the scene.
    • The landscapes and distinctive covered bridge were filmed at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch in Santa Clarita, California, which were used for major scenes focusing on Pete and Elliott.[1]
  • The town is based on the real-life Passamaquoddy Bay, a large inlet of the Bay of Fundy, between the U.S. state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick.
    • The name comes from the Passamaquoddy people, a Native American tribe that inhabits the area. The name means "people who spear pollock" in their language.
