Role in the series[]
Based on rumors Penny's master hears from other sailors about the existence of merfolk, Hans attempts to verify these claims by exploring the undersea world with the invention of his primitive submarine and brought Penny with him. While exploring the undersea world, the sub springs a leak and the steering controls are affected causing his sub to lose control and eventually sink to the bottom. However, to Penny and her master's surprise, they encounter Ariel, to which Hans' claims are verified.
Later on, Archimedes, Sebastian, Flounder, the Crabscouts, and even King Triton appear to assist Penny and Andersen's damaged vessel back to the surface. Upon making it safely to the surface, Hans tells Penny they'll live to the tell the story after all thanks to Ariel. At the end of the episode, Hans is inspired by the encounter to "write" the story of The Little Mermaid. Penny is last seen with her owner as he sits on a dock writing his story and preparing to read it to a group of children.
