"Pepper Shaker" is the first segment of the twenty-ninth episode of Pepper Ann. It aired on February 8, 2000.

Synopsis[]

An earthquake in Hazelnut has Pepper Ann worried that her town isn't safe from natural disasters.

Plot[]

At 3:41 AM, a minor earthquake shakes all of Hazelnut. Pepper Ann is frightened of the event, but everyone else seems either entertained, indifferent, or Milo's case, completely slept through it. At school, Nicky informs the two that while aftershocks are common, the earthquake was so minor that it will most likely end with just the one. Pepper Ann cannot take the thought of going through another earthquake and asks Nicky to help her and Milo prepare for the next disaster, despite her having held a seminar once on the issue (they thought it was boring).

Nicky helps Pepper Ann and Milo prepare by collecting essentials and learning medical aid. Pepper Ann becomes more paranoid at the thought of terrible things happening, but Nicky informs her that disaster rarely happen and she should not have to worry. Nevertheless, Pepper Ann starts to see everything as a danger and doubles down on her safety by sleeping outside in a tent and suggesting they get a bomb shelter. Nicky and Milo show up to ask Pepper Ann if she wants to hang out, but she is too preoccupied with her new lifestyle.

Pepper Ann has a dream where she, Nicky and Milo are living in a desert fort with some of their friends as mutant bikers. The dream ends with a tsunami coming out of nowhere and Pepper Ann awakens screaming and running to her friends to protect them. As she meets up, they see a news report that the earthquake was not a real one and it was simply the aftershock of an action movie that was filming nearby. Pepper Ann admits that she went crazy and joins her friends. Real disaster suddenly play out, confusing Milo, but are debunked by Pepper Ann and Nicky.
