Pete "Claws" Ward (or simply just Claws) is a supporting character in Disney•Pixar's 2001 animated film Monsters, Inc. and other related media. He is one of the monsters who works for the Monsters, Inc. company.
Background[]
Pete is a reptilian monster with sky blue skin all around his body — specifically, his head resembling that of a crocodilian. He is shown to have purple spikes protruding from his back and his tail, a pattern of dark blue stripes on his arms and legs, as well as three sharp claws sticking out of both of his feet. True to his name, he also has four claws sticking out of his hands which earned his namesake "Claws". In addition to his appearance, he is shown to have a horrifying breath whenever he goes into session. He also shows a good friendship with Lanky Schmidt and George Sanderson.
Personality[]
While often seen in the background, Claws appears to act like everyone else who works at Monsters, Incorporated, where he works with various other co-workers at the company. In spite of this, he can occasionally get emotional in certain situations, such as when a human child almost harmed him, causing him to fail his lesson in scaring.
Appearances[]
Monsters, Inc.[]
Claws is first seen in an ad for the Monsters, Inc. company where he is seen on each child's scarer being matched to the child's fears where is shown to be matched with a young boy. He then appears in the Scare Floor where he and the monsters begin their session in providing screams for Monsters, Inc., to which during the session, Claws attempts to scare a child, but runs out of the door crying in fear, telling his assistant Chuck that the child almost killed him due to human interactions with monsters being a hazard to them at that time. This results in the door where Claws failed to scare the child to be shredded, causing the company to shred the door, making the 58th door lost in the week.
Claws later appears in Harryhausen's where he is talking with a fellow customer. Later when Boo appears and sneaks up in the restaurant, Claws and the other survivors inside the restaurant panic in fear seeing a human child inside. He is later seen talking to Lanky Schmidt during the part where Mike runs down the hall.
During Waternoose's arrest, Claws can be seen among the crowd of monsters watching him get taken away by the CDA. He is last seen on the laugh floor among the other monsters enjoying their new jobs as comedians.
During the "Put That Thing Back Where It Came From or So Help Me" sequence seen during the credits, Claws is seen amongst the other monsters in the audience where he becomes emotional watching during Mike's singing and begins crying, which Chuck slaps him, telling him to calm down (similar to how he did earlier in the film during the Scare Floor session). Later after the act ends, Claws and the rest of the audience cheer for Mike's wonderful performance. This could also give a hint that Claws is still working at Monsters, Inc., even after Waternoose's arrest.
Monsters University[]
While Claws does not make a physical appearance in Monsters University, his profile can be seen on a Scare Card during the end credits. It is also said on his card that Claws graduated from Fear Tech and formerly worked at Fear Co.
Monsters at Work[]
Claws appears in Monsters at Work as one of the employees at Monsters, Inc., often seen as a background character.
In "Descent into Fear", Claws is revealed to have returned to working for Fear Co. alongside Harley Gerson, suggesting that he was either unable to adjust to being a jokester or he preferred to be a scarer. Luckily, he eventually returns to Monsters, Inc. to become a jokester again.
Disney Parks[]
Disney On Ice[]
While not a meetable character at the parks, Claws' first live appearance was in the Monsters, Inc.-inspired Disney On Ice program which debuted back in 2003, two years after the original Monsters, Inc. film was released, in which the program is a retelling of the original film itself.[1]
Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek[]
Claws appears in one scene in the Tokyo Disneyland ride, where he is seen in the Laugh Floor scene. He is seen tasting cupcakes curiously throughout the attraction, which the next scene after that is the outdoor parts of Monstropolis.
