"Pie Hard" is the first segment of the seventy-third episode of Big City Greens.

Synopsis[]

The Greens go to a diner where Gramma challenges the local diner owner to a "pie-off".

Plot[]

The Greens and Remy arrive at Downtown Smallton, a shopping strip, and decide to drop by Patti's Diner, the Greens' usual eating spot in the country. As they all enter, they are greeted by the owner Patti who is happy to see the Greens, Tilly especially as she makes her favorite blueberry pie. Gramma Alice is put off that Tilly considers Patti's blueberry pie her favorite and tries to talk her out of having it, but Patti says she will bake a new pie. Bill is disgusted with having a liverwurst sandwich as his "usual", but Cricket wants a usual too and demands a meat-wich to be it. Meanwhile, Remy stops by the gift shop to get something for Vasquez, but cannot find the right gift.

As Tilly talks about how great Patti's pies are, Alice confronts Patti in the kitchen and challenges her to a bake off to see who can make the best pie, which Patti casually accepts. Wanting the meat-wich to be his usual, Cricket demands another one from the waiter Wayne. Bill warns Cricket about getting a usual, but Cricket is so determined that he insists that Wayne not write it down and have it to memory. Wayne panics and gives Cricket a carrot on a bun so Cricket makes a song for him and he gets it this time. Patti and Alice finish baking, but when Alice tries Patti's pie, she concludes that it is the best pie she has ever tasted.

Alice attempts to stop Patti from delivering her pie, but Tilly catches them. Just then, Remy, who decided to buy every souvenir, returns and trips, nearly crushing Patti's pie. Alice rescues it, but her pie is destroyed instead. Alice admits that she was jealous and worried that Tilly would not want her to bake anything for her ever again, but Tilly tells her that she will always be her grandmother and love her no matter what. As everyone digs into the pie, Cricket decides to give up on the meat-wich to have some, but Alice tells him that he needs to finish it first. Bill maniacally laughs over the fact that Cricket is now stuck with his "usual".

Trivia[]

  • The title is a reference to the movie Die Hard.
    • Interestingly, the reference was kept in Spain (in Spain Die Hard is know as La Jungla de Cristal, which translates to The Crystal Jungle) with the Spanish title being La Jungla de Pastel, which translates to The Pie Jungle.
  • This episode and its sister aired on the same day as the first part of The Owl House series finale three-parter, "Thanks to Them".
    • Unlike prior where Big City Greens would take a hiatus to allow other Disney TVA series to finish (in 2022), it airs alongside The Owl House.
  • This and its sister episode were released on Disney+ in early access.
    • This is the second episode to do this, after "Rembo" and "Dirt Jar".
  • Alice says "Blort" in this episode just like in the episode "Bleeped".
  • Moral: You don't have to do something to be one's favorite because they love you already.
