Pirate Crew

The Pirate Crew is a group of pirates featured in the Tokyo DisneySea attraction, Sindbad's Storybook Voyage.

History[]

Background[]

Originally in the pre-2007 revamp, the figures of what are now used as the pirates were originally Sindbad's allies who helped Sindbad throughout his journey in sailing the voyages across the ocean in facing a number of obstacles throughout the attraction. At the end of the attraction is a bearded salesman who is actually a member of Sindbad's crew in the attraction selling Sindbad's ship.

In the post-2007 revamp of the attraction, the animatronic figures were redressed to make them into antagonistic pirates serving as obstacles towards Sindbad and Chandu throughout their adventures.

Development History[]

When the attraction first opened as "Sindbad's Seven Voyages", it remained unpopular with guests due to its scary theme. In the original version of the attraction, the figures of what are now the antagonistic pirates from the attraction were originally Sindbad's crew who were assisting Sindbad on his journey across the oceans in facing dangers throughout their journey.

After the attraction closed in 2006 and reopened as Sindbad's Storybook Voyage, the figurines that were originally part of Sindbad's crew were redressed as antagonistic pirates who serve as obstacles Sindbad and Chandu which they encounter on their journey after sailing away from the port of Baghdad.

Role in the attraction[]

Pre-2007 revamp[]

In the first incarnation of the attraction, the animatronic figures of what are now the pirates in the attraction were actually Sindbad's crewmen who help Sindbad on their journey far from the Arabian port. There, they survive a number of hazards throughout the attraction such as a group of mermaids, the mother Rukh, the Giant, a group of monkeys, and a giant whale disguised as an island. Sindbad manages to return back to the port in time.

Post-2007 revamp[]

The animatronic figures that were originally Sindbad's crew are redressed as villainous pirates throughout the current incarnation of the attraction. In the queue, a poster depicting a band of pirates roping the mother Rukh is displayed with Sindbad and Chandu facing them.

In the ride, two pirate ships are seen docked in Rukh Island where the emblem seen on the pirates' Jolly Roger is a sinister face wearing a hat engraved with two crossed swords on it rather than the traditional skull and crossbones design. One pirate is seen hitting a Rukh egg with an axe, while more pirates are seen attacking a group of eggs with Rukh hatchlings on another side of the scene while Sindbad and Chandu help protect the eggs from being stolen while the mother Rukh helps them throughout the ambush. In the Cave of the Giant, one pirate is seen foiled with a goblet on his head while Chandu is seen tying up another pirate while Sindbad uses a Rukh's feather as a key to rescue the Giant where the next room features pirates who are all tied up together in the attraction just as Sindbad and the Giant sing along after the Giant was rescued.
