Pixie Hollow Games is a half-hour TV special broadcast in 2011, based on the Disney Fairies franchise, produced by Disneytoon Studios. It features the voices of Mae Whitman, Lucy Liu, Raven-Symoné, Megan Hilty, Angela Bartys, and others, as Tinker Bell and the other fairies of Pixie Hollow in Neverland, taking part in an Olympic-style competition. It is based loosely on J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan stories, by way of Disney's 1953 animated adaptation.

It was originally intended as the last of five feature-length films in the Tinker Bell series of direct-to-DVD 3D animated films, with the title Tinker Bell: Race through the Seasons and a release date in 2012. However, the movie was rescheduled and retooled as a TV special instead of a film-length movie. Unlike the previous feature films in this series, Tinker Bell is not a central feature in this special release, instead, one of her fellow Pixie Hollow fairies Rosetta is the central feature in this release.

Plot[]

The movie opens with the fairies making final preparations for the Pixie Hollow Games. Rosetta, who is afraid of dirt, freaks out when a new garden fairy named Chloe accidentally getting her dirty while training for the games. Rosetta is surprised at Chloe's eagerness to participate in the games considering that the garden fairies have never even come close to winning. When it comes time to select Chloe's teammate for the games, Fern selects Rosetta because she has been weaseling her way out of the games numerous times in previous years. Left with no other choice by the other garden fairies, who endured humiliating losses in previous games, Rosetta reluctantly agrees.

The night of the games, Bobble and Clank act as announcers as the teams arrive, including the Storm fairies Rumble and Glimmer, who are seeking to achieve a record fifth consecutive win. The first game is leapfrogging, where contestants must race laps on top of frogs. Rosetta struggles to participate because of her fear of the frog slime, which results in accidentally knocking the Healing Fairies out of the race and causing the storm fairies to lose first place to the Animal Fairies. Despite coming in last place, the Garden Fairies advance to the next round since the Healing Fairies didn't finish. The overcompetitive Rumble grows bitter about losing first place, ignoring Glimmer's advice about being a good sport. After the first day, Rosetta believes they won't make it any further, but the other Garden fairies are excited that their team has gotten past the first game for once.

The next day, Rosetta and Chloe continue to compete in games such as dragonfly water skiing, twigspheres, and mouse polo, slowly moving up in the standings during each game. In the teacup challenge, where teams must race flying teacups powers by pixie dust, the Garden Fairies take the lead while the Light Fairies team is eliminated when they use to much pixie dust and get their teacup stuck in the top of a tunnel. In the final leg of the race, Rosetta costs her team the win when she is unable bring herself to slide down a slimy slide and the Garden Fairies end up in last place for the final event. Rumble mocks the Garden Fairies having the most humiliating failure in Pixie Hollow Games history and belittles tells them they should stick to being pretty. Guilt about her vanity ruining all of Chloe's hard work, Rosetta decides to conquer her fear and give her all for the final event, the derby cart race. The next morning for the race, Rosetta apologies for Chlore for her half-hearted performance and announces she has a plan to win the Games with some modifications Tinker Bell made to their cart.

For the derby cart race, the remaining four teams race down a single-file road with three chances to pass using increasingly difficult shortcots placed along the course. The first place Storm Fairies start out in the lead, but the Fast Flying Fairies Team crash when they try a jump shortcut, and the Dustkeeper Fairies Team cart sinks when they try the pond shortcut, leaving just the garden and storm fairies. Rosetta and Chloe take the final, most difficult, mudhill shortcut and successfully make it over thanks to Tinker Bell's modifications and get ahead of the storm fairies. However, Rumble refuses to lose and forces Glimmer to zaps one of the Garden Fairies cart's wheels, causing it to crash. Even though they crashed, Chloe and Rosetta decide to still finish what they started and push their cart over the finish line together. When Queen Clarion announces the winner is actually the Garden Fairies. Rumble protests that his cart crossed first, but Clarion reveals that both members of a team must cross the finish line to win, and Glimmer is revealed had secretly stayed behind before crossing the finish line in protest of Rumble's cheating and poor sportmanship. The Garden Fairies celebrate breaking their losing streak and during the credits, Bobble and Clank recap the events of the games and congratulating the Garden Fairies for proving to everyone they were more than just pretty faces.

The score to the special is composed by Joel McNeely, who scored the first three Tinker Bell films. Zendaya sings the theme song (written by Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda of GrooveLily), which is called "Dig Down Deeper". Zendaya performed "Dig Down Deeper" in the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Release[]

The special debuted in the United States on Disney Channel on November 19, 2011.

While initially not receiving its own separate home video release, the special was included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release of Secret of the Wings in 2012. It was finally given its own stand-alone release exclusively on DVD (likely because of space limitations on DVDs that are not the case on Blu-Ray, making a Blu-Ray re-release unnecessary) on August 20, 2013.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a TV special, Pixie Hollow Games has the largest number of characters, even more so than some movies.
  • This is the first Disney Fairies entry where Megan Hilty voices Rosetta, replacing Kristin Chenoweth who previously voiced her in the previous three films.
  • At the beginning of the TV special, Fawn is aware of the irony of the situation of Rosetta being fearful of dirt despite being a garden fairy, which was first previously brought up in the movie Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue by Vidia.
    • Rosetta's mysophobia (fear of dirt) is largely emphasized further in this TV special.
    • Despite Rosetta overcoming her fear of dirt by the end of the TV special, Rosetta is still depicted as fearful of dirt in later Disney Fairies entries such as The Pirate Fairy and Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast, meaning that this trait of hers has been ignored or retconned in those films.
  • At the start of the TV special, Tink and the other Never Fairies are all seen wearing the exact same outfits from Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, although they would revert back to their outfits from the first movie after getting eliminated.
  • Pixie Hollow Games event is a parody of the Olympics games.
    • The first event, leapfrogging, is a parody of both horse and three-legged races mixed together.
    • The second event, dragonfly water skiing, is a parody of water skiing.
    • The third event, twigspheres, is a parody of ballwalking.
    • The fourth event, mouse polo, is a parody of urban horse polo.
  • In each event, the fairy teams that win and eliminated are the following;
    • Leapfrogging
      • Win: Animal Fairy team
      • Eliminated: Healing Fairy team
    • Dragonfly water skiing
      • Win: Unknown
      • Eliminated: Water Fairy team (implied, as the Water Fairies are nowhere to be found in subsequent events)
    • Twigspheres
      • Win: Garden Fairy team
      • Eliminated: Tinker Fairy team
    • Mouse polo
      • Win: Garden Fairy team
      • Eliminated: None
    • Tea cup challenge
      • Win: Storm Fairy team
      • Eliminated: Light Fairy team
    • Derby cart race
      • Win: Garden Fairy team
      • Eliminated: Fast Flying Fairy team, Dust Keepers Fairy team, Storm Fairy team
  • It is revealed in this film that all the Garden Fairies are infamous for always losing in all Pixie Hollow Games prior to Rosetta and Chloe joining in, as well as how Rosetta has never participated in any of Pixie Hollow Games prior to the events of this TV special due to Rosetta sitting out of the games numerous times in previous years.
  • It is implied that Chloe is the youngest of all the garden fairies, as evident when Rosetta remarks to her fellow fairy companions that Chloe is a "new arrival" when Rosetta first met her.
  • The humiliating losses that the Garden Fairies had experienced in previous Pixie Hollow Games prior to Rosetta and Chloe joining in consists of the following:
    • Fern slipping in slug slime and separated her septum.
    • Lilac swallowed so much mud that she sprouted weeds out of her nose.
    • Ivy got trampled by a frog during leapfrogging, which is apparently so traumatic to her that it makes her cry when reminded of it.
  • Ivy's tendency of frequently crying over the smallest things in this TV special could possibly be a nod to Cubby's emotional outbursts over Tinker Bell's ailing condition in Return To Never Land.
  • Running Gags:
    • Rosetta being fearful of dirt and getting herself dirty.
    • Ivy frequently crying over the smallest things, whether her tears are happy or sad.
    • Clank frequently gets over-excited when making announcements, causing Bobble tons of bad luck in the process due to the former's clumsiness and stupidity.
    • Rosetta flunking in each event by fault of her own until the derby cart race.
    • Terence feeling shy over the idea of wearing the team Dust-keepers' kilt uniform, thinking that they're skirts, which Fairy Gary denies.
  • As of 2024, this special, along with Pixie Hollow Bake Off, is unavailable for streaming on Disney+ (except for Hong Kong in this special's case) for unknown reasons.
