The Plaque Devil is a character from the Haunted Mansion attraction at the Disney Parks.
Background[]
Located on the plaque outside the Haunted Mansion attraction depicts a sculpted head of a screaming devil. The devil head is depicted with two horns protruding from both sides of its head. In addition to the hair located on top of its head, two snakes are seen strangling its head.
Development[]
According to concept art, the Ghost Host was not originally going to talk to guests who arrive at the foyer area as a disembodied voice but rather from an animate bust to which when he spoke, the bust would morph into a menacing demon. The plaque depicting an image of a screaming demon appears to have been inspired by the unused concept of the bust morphing into a demon, implying that it would be a physical appearance of the Ghost Host.
Appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
Disneyland/Magic Kingdom[]
In the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions of the attraction, the plaque depicting a screaming devil appears when guests enter the Haunted Mansion attraction. The devil's head is seen with wrinkles, angry eyebrows, two horns protruding from his head as well as wearing a high collar. The sculpted head of the demon has two snakes strangling the head, seemingly that he is screaming.
Tokyo Disneyland[]
In the Tokyo Disneyland version of the attraction, the entrance plaque to the attraction instead depicts a skull on it, making it a completely different character known as the Wailing Skull. Unlike the ones in California and Florida, this plaque is located ontop of the mansion's gates rather than appearing on the walls.
The plaque with a demon on it, however, appears during the scene when guests prepare to enter the mansion.
Phantom Manor[]
A variant of the devil on the plaque at the Disneyland Paris version known as "Phantom Manor" depicts a sculpture of a devil who resembles the late Vincent Price, which can often be interpreted as the Vincent Price Devil. Unlike in the original Haunted Mansion attraction at the parks, this plaque depicts a sculpture of a grinning devil showing an evil grin although he slightly resembles the one from the original attraction.
Other appearances[]
Muppets Haunted Mansion[]
A Mo Frackle variant of the plaque appears in the 2021 Halloween special of the Muppets franchise. The plaque is decorated with the address 924 (a reference to Jim Henson's birthday) engraved on it.
Haunted Mansion (2023)[]
Two illustrations of the demon head seen on the plaque briefly appear during the flashback sequence showcasing the life of Alistair Crump.
