Portorosso is the primary location featured in Disney/Pixar's 2021 animated feature film Luca.
Background[]
Portorosso is a small town located on the Italian Riviera. It is near Corniglia.
Luca Paguro spends his summer here hanging out with his new best friends Alberto Scorfano and Giulia Marcovaldo, and enjoying the Italian experience with gelato, pasta, and Vespa rides.
However, the town had a history of having hatred against sea monsters, as there are art pieces (as well as the central fountain) dedicated to fishermen slaying said creatures. This causes Luca and Alberto's fun in Portorosso to feel threatened, as they are sea monsters themselves, and attempt to keep their secret identities hidden from the citizens.
Trivia[]
- The name of this town is the union of that of the Italian villages Portovenere and Monterosso. It could also be a reference to Studio Ghibli's Porco Rosso, also set in Italy.
- Portorosso can be seen as an advertisement on a travel agency window in Pixar's previous film Soul.
- Several cars seen in Portorosso have reused models from Cars 2, specifically the Piaggio Ape. Additionally, a teal Fiat 500 can also be seen when Luca and Alberto explore the city around them.
- The end credits show that the statue of the central fountain has been replaced with the "Smuca" statue, suggesting the town has removed its anti-sea monster imagery to showcase their newfound acceptance/respect to the species.
- By coincidence, there is a real town in Slovenia called Portoroz, but its Italian name is Portorose very similar to Portorosso.
