Production[]

In June 2022, Dan Trachtenberg stated in June 2022 that there are discussions for additional installments being developed after the release of Prey. The filmmaker stated that moving forward, the intent is to do things that have not been done before in the franchise.[2] In February 2024, it was reported that a number of Predator projects are in development, with Dan Trachtenberg involved with each installment. While a sequel to Prey is one of them, a new film with the working title of Badlands is scheduled for principal photography in July of the same year. Trachtenberg will once again serve as director, with a script written by Patrick Aison, from an original story they co-authored. The plot will center around a new female lead, and be set chronologically in the future.[3][4] Actress Elle Fanning has been in talks to star in the leading role.[5]

Filming began on August 27, 2024, in New Zealand, with Elle Fanning confirmed for the lead role. The film was now given the full title of Predator: Badlands.[6]

On October 22, 2024, Deadline reported that the film would be released on November 7, 2025, taking over the release date from Blade.[7] It was later revealed that Predator: Badlands would actually be the seventh film and that a "secret" Predator movie was filmed and expected to be released before.[8] That film ultimately ended up being Predator: Killer of Killers.

Trivia[]

  • Given the involvement of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, this confirms what was established in Alien: Earth, namely that Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, as well as Ridley Scott's own Word of God, are no longer canon (as all three established that the Alien and Predator universes are separate), with Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem being re-integrated into Alien canon.
  • Predator: Badlands is the second film in the Predator franchise to be rated PG-13, after Alien vs. Predator.[9]
    • As confirmed by Ben Rosenblatt, rather than the attempt to make it more family-friendly, this was attributed to the lack of human presence in the film hence Predator: Badlands' graphic depictions of violence and gore would be creature-on-creature or android-related while just as intense as previous R-rated installments.[10][11]
  • This is the first Predator film in which the species' named Yautja is ever said onscreen.
