- “The only way forward is back.”
- ―Agatha Harkness to Wanda Maximoff
"Previously On" is the eighth, and penultimate episode of the Disney+ streaming television miniseries WandaVision, and was released on February 26, 2021. It was written by Laura Donney and directed by Matt Shakman.
Synopsis[]
Wanda embarks on a troubling journey revisiting her past for insight into her present and future.
Plot[]
In Salem in 1693, Agatha Harkness is put on trial by her own coven for practicing dark magic. As they attempt to execute her, her newfound abilities allow her to absorb the life out of her whole coven including her mother Evanora. Back in the present, Agatha explains to Wanda that she has her children held captive and wants to know what her secret is for the Hex and the things happening in Westview. She further reveals that the fake Pietro, or "Fietro", was her doing, but Wanda still is not sure how she changed Westview. Agatha takes a strand of her hair and creates a doorway to her memories.
Wanda and Pietro lived in war torn Sokovia with their loving parents and would watch classic sitcoms on DVD for entertainment and to learn english. While watching The Dick Van Dyke Show, their apartment is bombed; killing their parents while Wanda and Pietro hide under the bed from a Stark missile that does not blow up. Agatha believes that Wanda used a probability spell to keep the bomb from exploding, but Wanda is unsure. Later, they see Wanda volunteering for Hydra where she interacts with the Mind Stone for the first time. Agatha realizes that it helped strengthen her abilities.
Wanda is now living at the Avengers Compound. While watching Malcolm in the Middle, Vision visits her and the two bond over their shared love over the concept of humor, thus setting the seeds for their relationship. Agatha then has Wanda relive her venture to the S.W.O.R.D. base to see Vision's body. She meets with Hayward who reveals that they are taking his body apart as he is considered a weapon. While Wanda examines the body, she admits that she does not feel him and leaves dejected along with a folder left in her car.
Wanda drives back to her home in Westview, where her neighbors look miserable. While examining a note left by Vision, she breaks down and unleashes a whirlwind of magic that encases all Westview in the Hex. Then, the yellow colored energy of the Mind Stone comes out from inside Wanda's body as her magic also recreates Vision, who manifests himself in the new reality, allowing her to live a happy sitcom life with him. Agatha realizes who Wanda actually is and disappears. Hearing her children cry for help, Wanda rushes outside and discovers Agatha holding them hostage. She tells her that she is using chaos magic and is very dangerous before announcing that she is the Scarlet Witch.
In a mid-credits scene, Director Hayward unleashes his weapon, which is a white version of Vision rebuilt from the remains of his original body.

Trivia[]
- Wanda's alias "Scarlet Witch" is mentioned for the first time.
- This is the second episode to have a post-credit scene, following the previous episode.
- This episode reveals the childhood incident when Wanda and Pietro had a close call with a Stark explosive, which was first mentioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
- It is revealed that the 'WandaVision series is based on sitcoms because Wanda is always watching them when facing difficult moments in her life, as a way to comfort herself and escape reality since the episodes always end well to the characters. She and her family enjoyed to watch them together as a way to momentarily forget their tough life in Sokovia. She is later seen watching them while she was being experimented by HYDRA and after her brother's death. Thus, after losing Vision, Wanda sought solace in the sitcoms again by making them the basis of her fantasy reality.
- The heart on the note Vision left for Wanda refers to the heart seen on the calendar during a couple of episodes of the series, including the first episode, when Wanda and Vision see the heart marking a date in the calendar but neither of them are able to remember what they are supposed to celebrate on that day.
- Agatha manages to make Wanda show how the Westview reality was created and how she recreated Vision with her powers, prior to the first episode.
- When Wanda recreates Vision, a yellow colored energy comes out of her to give form to him inside the new reality, indicating that he was made with a piece of the Mind Stone that lives inside Wanda.
- This is also hinted during a previous scene, in which Tyler Hayward tells Wanda that she has the power to bring her "soulmate" back to life. As "soulmates" refer to a pair of individuals with a strong bond that complement each other, also often defined as a soul split in two, this refers to Wanda recreating Vision using a piece of herself as her heart and/or soul.
- The creator of the series, Jac Schaeffer, further reinforces this idea by calling the Vision recreated by Wanda "Soul Vision".[1][2]
- The ToastMate 2000's bleeping red light, featured in an advert, for the first episode, is revealed to be the same one, from a Stark missile, as seen in Wanda's first flashback.
- Vision can be seen holding a doll earlier on in the third episode. This is the same doll featured in The Brady Brunch, which Wanda was watching, after her contact with the Mind Stone.
- This episode is similar to A Christmas Carol where the main character sees their past, present and future. (In this case though, young Wanda sees her future as the Scarlet Witch instead of the current Wanda.)
- The title is heard at the beginning of each episode and is used on television to recap the previous episode's plot. Within the episode, Agatha and Wanda recap their histories to one another and what lead to the creation of Wanda's reality in Westview.
- This episode explains how Wanda created Vision and dream life in Westview, prior to the start of the series.
- The flashback to Wanda going to S.H.I.E.L.D. to see Vision takes place three weeks after Avengers: Endgame, according to the official timeline.
- The script for this episode reveals that Agatha Harkness was born in either 1674 or 1675.
