The Quicksand Men are characters from the Haunted Mansion attraction at the Disney Parks.
History[]
Background[]
These men are depicted in a portrait where they are a trio of men sinking to their demise into a quicksand. Located on the three of them are a smug-looking man with his arms crossed wearing a jacket and a bowler hat, another man wearing a dark purple jacket with a white mustache, and another man wearing a blue jacket waist deep in the quicksand. Hence their name, they are shown to be sinking into a quicksand to their demise throughout the portrait. All of a sudden, the men who were stuck in a quicksand were unable to escape from their doom, leaving all three of them drowned to their deaths at the quicksand.
Appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
In the Stretching Room scene, one of the four stretching portraits depicts the portrait of three men sinking on a quicksand while narration from the Ghost Host is heard in the background giving guests a challenge of how to escape the Haunted Mansion; all of a sudden, a loud thunderclap is heard in the stretching room and after the sequence, guests exit the area and then proceed to the attraction's Doom Buggies.
Due to the success of the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion attraction was later constructed at Magic Kingdom at Liberty Square and Tokyo Disneyland at Fantasyland, still featuring the Stretching Room scene that depicts the painting of quicksand men.

SLG Comics[]
In the SLG comic adaptation of The Haunted Mansion, the men sinking on the quicksand appear in the story, Three of a Kind. The three men were named (from top to bottom) Big Hobbs, Hobbs, and Skinny Hobbs respectively. It is said that the Hobbs were notorious gamblers who were chased out into a bayou near Gracey Manor by Bartholomew Gore (William Gracey's alias). The Hobbs began to play cards to see who will carry across the quicksand which they mistook for mud. However, when they were stacked up on top of each other, the Hobbs then sank into the quicksand and drowned to their deaths. Like other victims who suddenly died, the Hobbs never realized that they became ghosts and are standing atop the quicksand while playing a game of cards.

Muppets Haunted Mansion[]

In the episode "The Magic Mansion", the smug-looking man makes a cameo as one of the portraits seeing Goofy and Daisy entering the Magic Mansion.
Film[]
Haunted Mansion[]
The quicksand men and the rest of the stretching room portrait ghosts appear in the 2023 reboot of the original 2003 film adaptation of the attraction. The trio are portrayed by Jared Simon, Joseph Miller, and Ian Covell. While often seen in the background, the portrait of the three men in quicksand begins to stretch in the stretching room alongside three other portraits when the Hatbox Ghost traps Ben Matthias and Travis inside the room, which is filled with quicksand, explosive barrels, and a pool full of alligators. Fortunately, Ben and Travis manage to escape the room via ceiling.
