Victor Randolph "Randy" Cartwright is an American animator, storyboard artist, and character designer, who has been a part of Disney Animation Studios since 1974 working in various departments for the company and Pixar.
Born in Newport News, Virginia; Cartwright trained in art and motion pictures at UCLA. While at school, he worked at Disneyland in the character department and portrayed Pluto, Practical Pig, Dopey, Prince John, and others during those years before graduating in 1974. He submitted multiple portfolios to Disney veteran Eric Larson before being hired by the studio in July 1975. During his first week on the lot, he was invited by supervising animator John Lounsbery to view a rough cut of The Rescuers, and ended up working on it as Ollie Johnston's assistant.
He progressed to full animator on Pete's Dragon and continued to supervise animators both in the U.S. and abroad in Japan and Taiwan for films, such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Brave Little Toaster. In 1986, he returned to main studio as the Artistic Lead for the Disney CAPS development team. He combined his knowledge of animation with an understanding of computers to help design and build the first fully digital animation production system. He won a Scientific or Technical Academy Award for this work. CAPs became instrumental for the 1990s Disney Renaissance era. By the next century, Cartwright also worked at other studios, such as Dreamwork Animation and Sony Animation.
