The relationships of Rapunzel.
Romance[]
- “Will you marry me, Rapunzel?
Yes. Yes, yes, yes!” - ―Eugene and Rapunzel[src]
Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert[]
When they first meet, their relationship is rather rocky, with Flynn simply helping Rapunzel to get his stolen satchel back. As they spend more time together, however, they learn to trust each other when they help each other in situations, especially when Rapunzel uses her hair to help Flynn. When Rapunzel first meets Flynn, she is excited to "have someone in her closet" and after a confrontation, he agrees to take her to see the lanterns. That evening, when they are on a boat waiting for the lanterns, they sing "I See the Light". Rapunzel gives back the satchel to Eugene but he refuses it and the two realize they are now in love with each other and almost kiss. However, due to Gothel and the Stabbington Brothers's manipulations, Rapunzel is led to believe that he abandons her for the crown and sells her to the Stabbington Brothers, which leaves her heartbroken. Eugene later escapes from imprisonment and rushes back to the tower to save Rapunzel and sacrifices himself to give Rapunzel the freedom she deserves and in tears, she saves him with the flower's power through her tears. Eugene comes back to life where he and Rapunzel finally share their first kiss. At the end of the movie, the couple lives happily ever after.
In Tangled: The Series (which is set 6 months after the film), Rapunzel and Eugene are still happily in love and the series shows the challenges the couple had to face before their happily ever after. Eugene and Rapunzel's relationship continues to be very strong and in episode such as "Queen for a Day", Eugene and Rapunzel support each other through everything that comes their way. Their relationship is tested in "Beyond the Corona Walls" when Eugene is forced into marrying his ex-fianceé Stalyan so Rapunzel fights her to get Eugene back and the couple reconcile. Rapunzel is shown to do whatever she wants to make Eugene happy, such as in "Lost and Found" when Rapunzel grants Eugene a birthday since they don't know when his actual birthday is, and Eugene does whatever he can to protect Rapunzel.
Throughout season 2, the couple face no challenges based on their relationship and work together along with their friends to solve the issue they are facing. This is shown again throughout season 3 after Cassandra's betrayal. Eugene and Rapunzel become acting king and queen after her parents lose their memories by Varian. Eugene and Rapunzel always find a way to connect with each other such as Rapunzel finally deciding to open up about Cassandra's betrayal to Eugene.
After all the adventures throughout the series, Eugene proposes to Rapunzel during the epilogue of the series finale, "Plus Est En Vous", and she ecstatically accepts. The two get married in Tangled Ever After.
Family[]
King Frederic[]
- “I miss you so much.”
- ―Rapunzel hallucinating a vision of her father.[src]
Rapunzel is the daughter of King Frederic. He was the one that gave his daughter her crown, before she was kidnapped.
When Rapunzel returned home and became living her life as a princess, the king became very protective of her, fearing that she may be taken away from him and his wife again. As the night that she was taken from them still haunts him and is terrified of his daughter being taken away from them again; his fear of that happening in the near future grew when Rapunzel's long hair returned.
Over the course of the show, despite the occasional arguments, both Rapunzel and Fredric learn to understand each other better and he learns to respect her wishes of wanting to see the world outside of Corona.
When Rapunzel goes travelling for a year, she deeply misses her parents,, but especially her father as shown when she and her friends are trapped on an island. King Fredric is the first one Rapunzel sees when she starts to use a special item that allows people to see what they really want. Through a lantern, Rapunzel sends her father a letter to express missing him and her mother, but knows they are always with her.
One year later when Rapunzel,, Eugene and their friends return to Corona, she is horrified to see King Fredric and Queen Ariana's memories have been erased by Varian and his allies, including Cassandra's ex-boyfriend, Andrew.
Rapunzel tries her hardest throughout the third season to make King Fredric and her mother regain their memories, which is successful towards the end of the series. Once his memories are returned, Fredric expresses how proud he is of Rapunzel and that she is capable of looking after herself.
Queen Arianna[]
- “Rapunzel, before I met your father, I was so much like you. I had no idea what I was supposed to do in this world. So I went out and found my own way.”
- ―Queen Arianna, to Rapunzel[src]
Rapunzel is the daughter of Queen Arianna. The queen loved her daughter very much, and was devastated when Mother Gothel took her away. For the next eighteen years, she and Frederic hosted the lantern festival on Rapunzel's birthday to commemorate her memory. After one of these events, the queen was informed of her daughter's return and, along with Frederic, rushed to greet her. While Arianna did not recognise her daughter at first, her motherly instincts kicked in and she and her husband embraced the princess. They celebrated her return for an entire week.
By the events of the TV series, it is shown that the pair have formed a strong mother-daughter bond, with Arianna often giving Rapunzel advice on how to pursue her dreams and sympathizing with her as well, establishing herself as someone that Rapunzel can confide in during times of uncertainty. She also gifts Rapunzel a blank journal to record her adventures, just like Arianna did with hers.
Willow[]

Friends[]
Pascal[]
- “Oh, buddy. I know why you came here. Life was so simple when it was just the two of us, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love you. That will never change. You will always be my best friend. Besides, nobody could ever take your place in my heart… or on my shoulder.”
- ―Rapunzel, after finding Pascal inside her tower[src]
Pascal is Rapunzel's best friend and her only company in the tower when Gothel is away. They met as children shortly after Pascal lost his mother and a young Rapunzel cures him from a snake bite with her hair; since then they grew up together as best friends and have done everything in the tower together. Pascal is the one who keeps encouraging Rapunzel about leaving the tower and the one who is constantly cheering her up, rooting her on, and refusing to allow her to take steps backwards. Being Rapunzel's only companion, he was very protective with her when she first met Flynn Rider.
Maximus[]
Rapunzel's sunny personality and compassion won Maximus over the moment they met. She presents affection that he was clearly missing from the Kingdom's royal guard and lightens his serious mood enough for him to postpone his hunt for Flynn. In Tangled Forever After, Maximus is the ringbearer in Eugene and Rapunzel's wedding.
Pub Thugs[]
While they do not seem to care much for Flynn, the denizens of the Snuggly Duckling have taken a liking to the lost princess, inspired by her dream and willing to help the two of them, dropping their stance on turning Flynn into the authorities immediately. They later turn up to rescue Flynn from the gallows (having received the news from Maximus somehow) specifically so that he could save Rapunzel.
Since then, they have turned up on more than one occasion with the two, attending/performing Rapunzel's homecoming and even being their for their wedding, implying that not only have they kept in touch with her, but that she was able to give them.
Cassandra[]
- “You are the closest thing that I will ever have to a big sister.”
- ―Rapunzel to Cassandra[src]
Cassandra is Rapunzel's handmaiden and close friend in Tangled: Before Ever After and follow-up series. Cassandra not only does what she can to serve Rapunzel, but also does what she can to help and support Rapunzel in her palace and princess life, as Rapunzel had spent the eighteen years of her life locked with a tower and has not idea on how to be a princess; as well as having to deal with her overprotective father. Cassandra came up with the idea to take Rapunzel over the wall and into the outskirts of Corona, so she could cheer her friend up and give her a chance to spend time in the outside world; as well as taking Rapunzel to the spot that the royal guards had found the flower that saved both her and her mother, and the reason for her healing powers. When Rapunzel touched one of the stone spikes that surrounded the spot, her long, blonde hair returned, the two knew that they could be in serious trouble should the King discover their little "trip" and how it led to Rapunzel's hair to grow back. Since the magic within the hair was the reason that Rapunzel was kidnapped as infant, so the two did what they could to hide it from the King, until Lady Caine's attacked forced Rapunzel to reveal it to the kingdom. Cassandra and Rapunzel then set out to uncover the truth for the hair's return and how it is connected to the stone spikes.
In the first season of the series, Rapunzel and Cassandra are shown to the best of friends and they always look out for each other. Despite Cassandra being Rapunzel's lady-in-waiting, the princess doesn't treat her like a servant but as a friend. Rapunzel is shown to be very supportive of Cassandra and looks up to her for inspiration as stated in "Challenge of the Brave". When Rapunzel, Cassandra, Eugene and their friends leave Corona to find Rapunzel's destiny, Cassandra promises Rapunzel's father she will look out for the princess.
However, things get complicated and rough between Rapunzel and Cassandra throughout season 2, especially in "Rapunzel and the Great Tree". When Adira joins the group's adventure and guides them through The Great Tree, Cassandra gets suspicious and jealous of Adira, especially when Rapunzel agrees with Adira's ideas and doesn't agree with Cassandra's. This causes Cassandra to lash out at Rapunzel and the princess to tell her friend off. The fight causes tension with the two girls, which got worse after Rapunzel accidentally burned Cassandra's right hand with the decay incantation. However they are eventually able to make amends when Rapunzel assures Cassandra that she is like a big sister to her but they don't have to agree on everything.
After speaking with Lord Demanitus, Rapunzel finds out that someone in her group will betray her once they all reach the dark kingdom but she doesn't want to believe it after everything that has happened. However after speaking with Eugene, he and Rapunzel have doubts that Cassandra will betray Rapunzel which does happen when Cassandra grabs the Moonstone before Rapunzel gets the chance.
Rapunzel and Cassandra's friendship is very rocky throughout season 3 as Cassandra has betrayed Rapunzel and wants revenge after seeing that her biological mother Gothel abandoned her for Rapunzel on the night the princess was born. Although Rapunzel is surprised that Cassandra is Gothel's daughter, she doesn't let it bother her as she knows that Cassandra is not like her mother. She constantly tries to tell Cassandra why she was taken by Gothel and that they are friends while believing that her being Gothel's daughter made them sisters, Cassandra refuses to listen and wants Rapunzel's destiny for herself. Cassandra comes back for revenge and for the Demanitis scroll which Rapunzel can't give her as it gives whoever has an incarnation to have power over the black rocks. Rapunzel and Cassandra wind up meeting again in "A Tale of Two Sisters" when they both end up trapped at Mother Gothel's Cottage, where Cassandra grew up. Rapunzel tries to tell Cassandra that Gothel never loved any of them and just as the girls are able to reconnect, Zhan Tiri puts a mirror in Rapunzel's purse which makes Cassandra think Rapunzel stole the only shred of love Gothel had for Cassandra which causes a rift in their friendship once again.
Towards the end of the series in "Once a Handmaiden...", Cassandra finds the truth behind Gothel's real feelings towards her and that Rapunzel was right. This causes Cassandra to find out that the Enchanted Girl is really Zhan Tiri and wants to make amends with Rapunzel. Cassandra poses as Rapunzel's new lady in waiting, Faith, and starts to get close to Rapunzel again but just as Cassandra tries to explain everything, her identity is revealed and eventually takes over Corona as its new leader after knocking out Rapunzel due to being tricked by Zhan Tiri.
In the final episode, "Plus Est En Vous", Cassandra is trying to destroy Corona and works with Zhan Tiri once more. Cassandra tries to take the power of the Sundrop from Rapunzel but instead is overpowered by Zhan Tiri who takes both the Sundrop and Moonstone to destroy the kingdom herself. While trapped, Cassandra feels greatly and genuinely remorseful of her heinous actions against Rapunzel and reconciles with her. Cassandra redeems herself by helping Rapunzel defeat Zhan Tiri, but after the demon's demise, Cassandra seemingly dies from the blast, so Rapunzel revives her and the others who were weakened by the demon's decay incantation. Rapunzel and Cassandra officially mend their friendship, officially becoming best friends once more, and chase after their own destinies after a tearful, heartfelt goodbye – Rapunzel becoming queen of Corona and Cassandra leaving the kingdom to find her destiny.
Old Lady Crowley[]
Despite Rapunzel being the princess, Crowley hates it when she (or anyone else) drags mud and dirt, on her beer, into the castle. Rapunzel however believes that deep down Crowley is a kind, caring person.
Xavier[]
When Xavier first appeared in the TV Series, Rapunzel and Eugene came to him so he could fix a broken necklace that belonged to a visitor from another kingdom, despite the late hour and knowing the true meaning of the emblem in the necklace the blacksmith was happy to help them. After he had fixed it, Xavier told Rapunzel and Eugene that the emblem truly represents the Separatists of Saporia, an ancient organization bent on destroying Corona; and that the necklace's owner is most likely a descendant of the original group. Rapunzel often turns to Xavier when it comes to threats from Corona's past and even legends.
Adira[]
Because Adira is shown to know more about that black rocks than she or her friends does, Rapunzel becomes willing to trust the mysterious warrior if it means uncovering her destiny. Despite Adira's subjected routes leading them into trouble. Rapunzel's trust in Adira puts her friendship with Cassandra to the test when Cassandra gets suspicious and doesn't trust Adira.
Varian[]
- “You didn't give up on me. I'm not giving up on you.”
- ―Varian to Rapunzel while she is still under the trance of the Decay Incantation after Quirin is freed[src]
Rapunzel had turned to Varian in hopes that his alchemy would help her and her friends uncover and to better understand the return of her long, blonde hair. When more of the spike-like black rocks came out of the ground and her hair started to glow near them, she asked Varian to not only help them in their studies of the rocks and the connection that they have with her hair, but to also keep it a secret; as her father didn't want her to talk about it with anyone else. Varian promised that he would help them and to keep their work a secret.
When a raging blizzard come to Corona however, Varian's father was being sealed in crystal and he turned to Rapunzel for help, as she has a connection with the black rocks. Rapunzel wanted to help her young friend, but as the temporary queen she couldn't leave her people and all she could do was watch the guards send him away. Varian felt betrayed by her actions towards him during his time of need, while Rapunzel felt guilty and couldn't face him afterwards, and he vowed that he would make her and anyone that has turned their backs on him pay. Varian later used their past friendship to trick Rapunzel into helping him steal the Golden Flower, so he could use its magic to free his father; when that didn't work, he realized that the flower's magic was now in Rapunzel. Rapunzel was devastated by Varian's betrayal and knew want kind of things that he may do to get what he wants. When Varian was defeated by Rapunzel and was arrested for his crimes against the Royal family, the princess urged her father to get the young alchemist help to regain his senses; indicating that Rapunzel believes that there is a chance for Varian to be good again. As there was a moment that he was about to regret his actions and accept her apology, until the guards came and make Varian think that she can't keep a promise.
Later, Varian kidnapped Queen Arianna and when Rapunzel and her father went to rescue her, he captured her and threatened her with encase her mother in amber unless she allows Varian to use her indestructible hair in a drill to break the amber and free his father, not caring about the harm it caused her, after this failed, Varian became angry and attempted to attack the royal family with an automaton, and after he threatened to crush her mother and Cassandra to death, she decided to touch the black rocks which destroyed the automaton, and Varian was arrested by his crimes against the royal family, although Rapunzel asked her father to not being so hard on him, still caring for him, even after his betrayal.
One year later, after returning from her journey following Cassandra's betrayal, Rapunzel and her friends discovered that Varian has teamed up with Andrew and the Separatists of Saporia and erased the King and Queen's memories to take over the kingdom and intended to do the same to the people of Corona, after being defeated in battle, Rapunzel and Pascal sneak to the Castle to take the kingdom back, but end up captured and thrown in the dungeon, where Rapunzel attempted to reason with Varian, telling him that her kingdom needed her during the blizzard and she could not done anything to the amber and that she didn't mean to break her promise to him and wants to be friends with him again, to which Varian reveals his true intentions to erase her and the kingdom's memories to gain their trust and forgiveness back, as he believes no one will forgive him for his past actions, but when the Separatists revealed their plans to destroy Corona, Varian betrayed them and attempted to attack them, only to be locked up in the dungeon with Rapunzel, where they sat down and she sympathized with him about him feeling betrayed by someone he trusted, as she was betrayed by Cassandra, and make up, when Eugene and Lance rescued Rapunzel, she asked them to allow Varian to help them to stop the separatists from destroying Corona, they worked together and when Varian offered to stop his chemicals from exploding on Corona, Rapunzel refused to let him and did it herself. Later they returned to his home in Old Corona, when Rapunzel once again attempted to use her hair to free Quirin from the amber with the Decay Incantation and trusted Varian to snap her from her trance with a bucket of water, when that failed, his refusal of giving up on her snapped her out and he thanked her for freeing his father and they hugged, reconciling their friendship.
Throughout Season 3, they've grown closer together. Later, when Corona was plagued by Cassandra's red rocks which showed people's worst fears, Rapunzel and Varian worked together to get rid of the rocks, going through underground tunnels where Varian revealed that the solution he's going to use on the rocks is the same one which encased his father and he still felt guilty about his past mistakes and the people of Corona hating him and that he felt ordinary compared to Rapunzel, as she was the embodiment of the Sundrop, to which Rapunzel comforted him and reassured him that there was nothing ordinary about him, when Varian becomes scared again, Rapunzel told him that he couldn't let fear run his life and also confided on him about her fear of Cassandra taking over Corona with her black rocks and also losing her as a friend forever, to which Varian comforted her and decided to face his fears and manages to encase the rocks in amber, to which Rapunzel ecstatically hugs and congratulates him and later tells the people about it, making them start respecting Varian again. Towards the end of the series, Rapunzel comes to Varian for help with the secret scroll and to defeat Zhan Tiri. In the end of the series, Plus Est En Vous, Rapunzel shows her further close relationship with Varian, as seen when she thinks of him as the most trusted engineer Corona has ever was.
Lance Strongbow[]
After Flynn and Lance were separated for 8 years, Lance came back and was introduced to Rapunzel. Lance gave Rapunzel a ring that he said was for the first one to find true love would give the special someone that ring. Then Lance told them that he lied and was sorry. He was also part of the princess breakout plan in Secret of the Sundrop. He also accompanied Rapunzel and Eugene on their trip outside of Corona.
Stalyan[]
Stalyan is Eugene's former fianceé, who wants him back and hates Rapunzel for "stealing" him away from her and blackmailed Eugene into marrying her by poisoning Lance, which leaves Rapunzel heartbroken, but soon, with Cassandra's encouragement, decides to crash the wedding, where she had a tug-of-war with Stalyan for Eugene, and manages to rescue him from the undesired wedding and cure Lance.
Some time later, Rapunzel was forced to seek Stalyan's help to retrieve the Eye of Pincosta that she and Eugene stole together years ago to save him and her friends from being sent to the mines of Pincosta. Stalyan at first refused to help Rapunzel until she offered to pay her with gold, during their journey, they didn't get along, as Rapunzel didn't agree to Stalyan's idea of stealing someone's horses to find the Eye faster and Stalyan called Rapunzel a bad judge of character for believing that there was good inside everyone, however they rode together on a log in a river to get to the diamond's owner and Rapunzel saved Stalyan from falling from a waterfall and when the two arrived to the house of the Eye's owner, they made a deal with him in which both of them would have to fight in his next wrestling match in exchange of the Eye, however Stalyan stole the Eye before the match began and left Rapunzel to fight their opponent alone, intending to free Eugene and win him back for herself. However, on her way, she found a note from Rapunzel saying that there was good in everyone, including Stalyan, which led her to have a change of heart and return to help Rapunzel in the wrestling match, in which they fought together and won the Eye. Before the two part ways, Stalyan revealed her acceptance of Rapunzel and Eugene's love and also gave her a new frying pan to replace the one she lost in the match, leaving on good terms. Rapunzel later told Stalyan's father, the Baron, that she had moved on with her life.
Enemies[]
Mother Gothel[]
Mother Gothel has the closest relationship with Rapunzel as they have known each other almost all their lives. Rapunzel clearly cared for Gothel and adored her until she revealed her true nature. If Gothel, however, loved her back is debatable. Gothel may have once cared enough for Rapunzel enough to go out of her way to keep Rapunzel happy (such as making her favorite dinner and collecting rare paint colors) though this might just have been to keep on being able to use Rapunzel's hair to remain young.
She also repeated to Rapunzel she loved her many times, but when she said she loved the most, she kissed her hair (which meant she loved her hair more). Gothel later reveals her true nature, and Rapunzel realizes that she views her as a tool and nothing more, straining their relationship to being arch-enemies, and providing a modicum of mental and emotional confusion for Rapunzel.
Gothel, in most encounters with Rapunzel and her friends, would try and convince her to return to the tower and live the way things were before. Nevertheless, despite Gothel now serving as her enemy, Rapunzel still seems to care for her as at one extent, when Gothel had been pushed off the tower by Pascal while she was dying, Rapunzel made a gesture to help her but to no avail.
Two years later, Rapunzel discovered that Gothel was Cassandra's biological mother, thus making them adoptive sisters, and later when she was trapped with Cassandra in Gothel's old cottage, she told her that Gothel wasn't the nurturing type, and that Gothel only wanted Rapunzel for her magic hair and that the only good thing Gothel ever did was bring them together.
Lady Caine[]
Caine holds a grudge against Rapunzel's father for locking up her father, as he believed him to be one of the people that kidnaped his daughter. After Rapunzel and her friends foiled her revenge and got her locked up for her crimes, she began to hold a grudge on her. Should she escape, she would most likely take her revenge on Rapunzel; and possible on those she cares about.
Monty[]
Monty is the only person in Corona who doesn't like Rapunzel, as her return has changed some of Corona's traditions; when they first met in person, Monty had given her a lollipop that was dropped on the floor and made her pay for it. Since Rapunzel has never met someone who disliked her, she tried to come up with many ways to win Monty over, which ended all in failure, so Rapunzel resorted to disguise herself to befriend him calling herself "Miss Misty" which worked well until she was forced to drop her disguise to save Monty from falling to a waterfall. Even after saving his life and also helping Monty to fulfill his lifelong dream and being able to hang his own medal next to the ones that were won by his family before him, the two were able to come to terms that their better off as "Not friends". As he had taught Rapunzel that it can be okay to have one person that doesn't like you; in which she thanked Monty by giving him a "Boo" back.
When the two met again, Monty was far less hostile toward Rapunzel than he was before. Which could mean that he was slowing opening up to her and to change himself.
One year later, after returning from her journey and reuniting with her friends, she also greeted an annoyed Monty, who smiled when she told him that she has missed him too. It seems that throughout Season 3, they've become less hostile towards each other.
Zhan Tiri[]
Rapunzel and Eugene learnt about Zhan Tiri in Queen for a Day but they didn't officially meet her until the season 3 episode Race to the Spire. Zhan Tiri told Rapunzel that she was playing Cassandra and using her for her own good. Rapunzel fought against Zhan Tiri in the series finale "Plus Est En Vous". With help from a reformed Cassandra, she managed to defeat Zhan Tiri for good, allowing everyone in Corona to receive their happy ever after and live in peace.
