Queen Rapunzel, formerly known as Zellie[1] in her youth for short, or Meadow as seen in credits, is a minor character in Descendants: The Rise of Red and a recurring character in the Descendants novels. She is one of the heroes of Auradon, being the queen of Tangleton and the the wife of Eugene Fitzherbert.
Role in the film[]
Rapunzel appears when Chloe and Red use a magical pocket watch to travel over 30 years back in time, after escaping Gothel by leaving her tower. She is among many of the students who attend Merlin Academy and was announced as "Zellie" for short. Despite this, her name was written as "Meadow" in the credits, and her character had her scenes reduced due to timing issues, including a fully recorded scrapped verse in "Life Is Sweeter" - however, this does not mean her character as Rapunzel no longer exists as she appeared as a background character instead as she is no longer the main focus.[2] This means that she only makes a cameo appearance and seems to enjoy playing the lute, an allusion to Rapunzel playing the guitar in "When Will My Life Begin". Meadow is also said to be a code name when hiding from Gothel, as this refers to a field with a group of flowers, referencing the Sundrop Flower. In concept art, her design featured many symbols of it on her clothes. This is similar to how Eugene went undercover as Flynn. She is well known for her long fast-growing hair, but while naturally brunette—and blonde due to the powers of the Sundrop—, she has highlights that are colored orange, blue, green, and yellow. Her dyed hair is a reference to Rapunzel's creativity and love for painting with many bright colors. As for her outfit, she wears a mini light purple corset as a reference to her outfit in the movie Tangled.
Printed media[]
In the present, she has a daughter named Ruby in Descendants: Wicked World and an unnamed daughter referred to as "Long Haired Princess" in the School of Secrets mini series which both aired on Disney Channel. Her husband still remains as Eugene Fitzherbert. They are specifically rulers of Tangleton, which is the new name given to Corona after uniting all the kingdoms. It is currently located in South Riding. After defeating Gothel, Rapunzel returned to her home and reunited with her parents in her kingdom - Gothel is later imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost when Auradon is established.
In The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel, Dr. Facilier asks his students for examples of villains with large ambitions, Ginny Gothel mentions that her mother stole Rapunzel's magic to keep herself young, also emphasizing that Rapunzel had really big hair. In Return to the Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel, we found out she wrote a book titled How to Keep Yourself Busy for Sixteen Years Alone, which was found by Carlos in the Auradon Prep Library. As for Escape from the Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel, while Carlos and Jane prepare everything for the graduation activities at Auradon Prep, it is mentioned that it had been a little difficult getting all the parents to agree to their plans, and that Rapunzel, for one, didn't want to let down her hair too much. It is later shown as something literal, since one of the objectives in the Senior Quest is to cut off a lock of Rapunzel's hair.
