"Raspberry" is the third episode of Win or Lose. It centers on Rochelle whose personal struggle is represented by her world literally crumbling and falling apart.
Synopsis[]
Rochelle looks like she has it all together: star catcher of her softball team, good grades, a part-time job at the Snack Shack—she's an impressive 13-year-old. The eldest child of a single mom, Rochelle has had to grow up fast. Money is tight, so she's been working hard to pay her softball dues for next year. When she sees an opportunity to earn some cash by helping her classmates with their assignments—is that cheating?—she reluctantly goes all in, becoming something of a professional hustler.[1]
Plot[]
Rochelle "Roshie" Kiana Rodriguez is an intelligent young girl who lives with her baby brother Zane and single influencer mom Vanessa "Van". Before training with the Pickles, she works the concessions counter where she collects money to help pay for her stay on the softball team. Rochelle imagines herself a successful business woman with a tall green suit and can sweet talk her way in and out of any deal, but also has an honorable and empathetic side. After collecting enough money, she joins the Pickles as their base catcher, a job she is inherently proud of. Despite this, she gets the feeling that Van is more concerned with her online followers.
After the game, Rochelle learns from Coach Dan that they are now asking for $1600 for admission due to the increase in travel, setting her back $600. She retains her emotions about the change, represented by her world literally crumbling around her, and is further surprised when Odo advises her to "beware the chicken". When with her mom, Van reveals that she bought her a pair of flashy new cleats. She admits that she had to make sacrifices that could financially set them back, but Rochelle tells her that it is okay.
Rochelle learns that Laurie follows Van online and she mentions seeing her next season, she starts to stress. Fellow student Tom asks Rochelle for help with his homework. Not wanting to fail, he offers to pay her $50 and she reluctantly accepts. Before she can tell him not to spread the word around, he does so, but when everyone offers to pay her, Rochelle agrees and works out of the bathroom. Soon her work gets to the point that she starts to help high schoolers, increasing her chances of making the admission fee. However, it starts to take a toll on her with her becoming increasingly tired, while Van seems to continue being a light-hearted woman.
Tom approaches Rochelle to help with a test in Frank's class. She refuses as he wants answers during the test, but she eventually accepts when he offers to pay her $100. Despite her specifically demanding that he sit behind her, Tom ends up sitting behind Kai, forcing Rochelle to write the answers down on a note and asking Kai to give it to Tom. Before they can succeed, Frank catches them. Later, Van asks Rochelle if she actually cheated, but she lies and says it was a misunderstanding. Van believes her, but when she reveals that she quit her job to focus on being a content creator, she and Rochelle get into an argument.
With no other option, Rochelle decides to sell her new cleats to someone online named BadBoy2023. The next morning, she leaves to go to the address, only to realize too late that she forgot her phone. Upon arriving, she encounters Chicken-Kev, and this makes her remember Odo's advice. She follows him into the house where there is a party happening. Chicken-Kev is in league with Brian Dyson (who was BadBoy2023) and Rinna who reveal that they don't want her shoes, but instead want her keys to the concession stand so they can take some money, offering to let her keep her cleats. She refuses, but tricks them into arguing with each other. When Ira enters and accidentally distracts them, Rochelle flees.
Rochelle runs down the street with the older teens chasing her in their car. Her world begins to morph and fall apart. She manages to evade the older teens, but loses her keys and is forced to wear her cleats after her old ones are destroyed. She attempts to run back to the game, but is too far at the end of town to get their on time. She finds an old payphone outside a gas station where fortuitously, Odo is there to offer her change to make a call.
Rochelle phones her mother and hears the dial tone, hoping that she will pick up soon.

Trivia[]
- In baseball and softball, "raspberry" is a slang term used to refer to a skin abrasion or bruise that a player can get from sliding. This happens when Rochelle's knee can be seen bleeding at the end of the episode.
- The Pizza Planet Truck from the Toy Story franchise makes a cameo in this episode. It can be seen when Vanessa drives Rochelle home as well as in the parking lot of the middle school.
- On top of that, Pizza Planet is also referenced in the episode; several pizza boxes from it are seen at the party.
- Sox can be seen on Laurie's phone in Vanessa's video of Rochelle getting her new cleats.[2]
- Rochelle lists her cleats on eBid, the eBay parody first seen in Toy Story of Terror!, suggesting that Win or Lose and the Toy Story franchise take place in the same universe, or it is just a coincidence.
