Raymond "Ray" Harryhausen was an American visual effects creator, writer, and producer, who created a brand of stop-motion model animation known as "Dynamation".

He was known for his works on monsters in films, especially Disney. As an homage to that, the sushi restaurant Mike and Celia dined at in the 2001 Disney/Pixar film Monsters, Inc., Harryhausen's, was named after him and his work was homaged in the Gravity Falls episode "Little Gift Shop of Horrors".

He also did the animation for Mighty Joe Young with Willis O'Brien, which the 1998 film by the same name is a remake of. He also appeared in the film as Gentleman at Party.

Ray 'retired' from dimensional animation in 1984, although he did indulge himself occasionally, to keep his hand in, on projects, such as the UK television documentary Working With Dinosaurs (1999) and the completion of The Tortoise and the Hare, now called The Story of the Tortoise and the Hare (2001/2), and a voice cameo in the New Line Cinema Christmas film Elf (2003).
