"Reaching Out" is the thirty-third episode of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. It premiered on April 9, 2022, and is the fourteenth episode in the second season.

Synopsis[]

Luz thinks she's found the perfect way for Amity to prove herself to her father: underground witch duels.

Plot[]

In the morning, Eda and King find Luz in the living room, still in her pajamas, acting very strange. She has planned a productive day of problem solving for herself. Her plans are to successfully build a working Portal, learn every glyph combination, and figure out what Belos is planning. Eda can tell she is avoiding something, which Luz, at first denies, but then admits it. Today, Luz and her Mom have a little ritual they do every year, but Luz is not specific about what it is. All she says is she misses her mother, and is trying to distract herself. As Eda and King head off to make breakfast, Amity shows up in need of Luz's help. Hearing that it could distract them all day, Luz immediately agrees to help. Tonight is the Bonesborough Brawl, an underground witches duel, and Amity, who is now old enough, wants to go with her father. But it is also the night of the Emperor's Coven tryouts. Amity's mother has already signed her up, and Alador has prepared an Abomiton chaperone to make sure she shows up. However, Amity no longer wants to join the Emperor's Coven. Alador was known to participate in the Bonesborough Brawl in his youth and made quite a name for himself when he won the champion belt. He was one of the best. But after joining the Abomination Coven, he stopped participating. Amity wishes to live up to her father's cool legacy by entering the Brawl and win the belt herself. But as usual, he does not listen. So, Luz suggests that Amity ditches the tryouts and enter the Brawl. And if she wins, it might give her the chance she needs to tell her father about not wanting to join a coven.

After sending Amity's "chaperone" on a wild goose chase, Luz, Amity, Eda, and King go to venue where the Bonesborough Brawl is taking place. And to hide her identity, Emira and Edric give her their concealment stones, which they use to hide their awkward adolescence flaws. Meanwhile, Eda and King tried to get some information out of Warden Wrath, the "Bonesborough Brawl champion" about Emperor Belos' plans for the Day of Unity and why Raine was acting so weird at the parade. However, Warden Wrath is unwilling to tell her anything, and calls security when she tries to threaten information out of him. She backs off, but does not give up. She already has a plan to brew up a blabber serum potion for him.

The Bonesborough Brawl begins, and Amity, under the name "Mighty Mittens", is doing very well against the competition. Luz, Emira and Edric are in the crowd, cheering her on. However, Luz finds herself bothered by whatever she is missing out on with her mother, especially when her phones constantly buzzes a reminder. Desperate to distract herself and avoid answering questions, she decides to help Amity win the belt by participating in the Brawl alongside her. Amity is concerned about her getting hurt, but does not try to stop her. Emira stands by for healing support, and Edric just observes from the sidelines. Edric feels left out, and lately he has been having issues with learning new spells. While wandering through the woods, he finds Eda and King trying to catch some creatures that have the vital ingredients for her blabber potion. When he demonstrates his knowledge of beast keeping, Eda and King invite him to help them out.

During the brawl, Luz and Amity easily manage to beat the other contestants, making their way up to the final round. At this point, the Abomiton Alador sent to care for Amity has returned. Luz tries to stop it from approaching Amity, and in her frustration sets off its alarm. Luz lies to Amity about touching it just as the final round is about to begin. Amity's final opponent is Warden Wrath. But just as the duel is about to begin, Alador shows up after receiving the Abomiton's alarm, and is very cross. Amity realizes Luz lied to her. She also notices that she has been acting strange all day, but Luz keeps refusing to talk about it. Sad and angry with both Luz and her father, she takes one of Luz's invisibility glyphs and runs away. Meanwhile, Eda, King, and Edric have nearly finished the potion, but it needs more heat. So, while Eda goes off to get more firewood, Edric decides to use Fire Bee Honey to give it the heat it needs, despite King's concerns. They are supposed to follow the recipe.

Luz finds Amity sitting under the tree they made at Grom. Luz silently sits beside her until Amity breaks the silence. She is disappointed with Luz for lying to her about entering the competition and messing with the Abomiton. She knows she is hiding something and it has something to do with the human realm. Luz finally tells her the truth. Apparently, today is the anniversary of her dad passing away, and she did not want to bring it up. He used to give Luz and her mother flowers on their birthdays. So after he passed away, they started picking flowers for each other on the anniversary of his death. Then they would visit his grave, and spend the day together. But this year, Luz is unable to be with her mom and has no flowers. When Amity told her about her problem with her dad, she either became jealous or sought a distraction from her issues. Either way, she only wanted to help, and apologizes to Amity for her reckless behavior. Amity is about to console her, when the two suddenly hear a commotion coming from the venue. The two head back to investigate, but Luz is unable to due to her legs feeling wobbly. So, she tells Amity to go on ahead and she will catch up later. Before heading back, Amity swears to help Luz find her some flowers.

Back at the venue, Warden Wrath has turned into a giant monster due to Edric changing the recipe of the blabber serum potion. Eda turns into her harpy form to fight him while Alador tries to restrain him. Amity shows up to help, but Alador pushes her away. They only way to stop the Warden from causing destructive chaos is to change him back. Edric suggests using a cold spell to reverse the mutation since heat caused the potion to mutate. Luz finally catches up, and has a plan on how to cool the Warden down. She thanks Amity for listening, and says she looks forward to picking flowers with her. Then she flies off with Eda, loaded with glyphs. Amity again tries to help her father restrain the Warden, and this time she stands her ground. This gives Luz and Eda the chance they need to create snow spell, which cools the Warden down and returns him to normal.

With Warden Wrath back to normal, Eda grabs him and demands answers about Emperor Belos' plans for the Day of Unity and why Raine was still working for him. Warden Wrath knows nothing about Raine, but has heard things about the Day of Unity. It is supposedly going to unite them with the Titan, but some do not think this "new world" will be very inviting to magickind. Wild or not. Edric apologizes for messing up her potion, but Eda is actually impressed. Instead of a blabber serum, he invented a transformation serum that could be worth selling. Meanwhile, Amity tells her father about not wanting to join the Emperor's Coven, and for the first time ever he listens and respects her decision. He even promises to speak to her mother about it.

Later, Luz and Amity meet up back at the tree on the cliffs. Luz uses a plant glyph to create some flowers and Amity creates an Abomination balloon to tie them too. The two then let the balloon and flowers go and watch it float away into the starry night. Back in the Human Ream, Camila puts a flower in a vase while Vee helps cook and takes a moment to admire the night sky, thinking about her daughter.
