The Red Devils[1] are characters featured in the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction at the Disney Parks.

History[]

Background[]

They are a group of demons that are encountered at the end of the attraction. These creatures inhabit a scene which represents Hell. Each of these demons has an evil grin implying that they show a hostile attitude to guests who encounter them as well as each being equipped with a pitchfork as weapons.

The late Candy Candido provided the vocal effects of the demons in the attraction.

Development History[]

The devils seen in the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction do not have any existing counterpart from The Wind in the Willows segment from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad nor its original novel by Kenneth Grahame as well as the scene they are encountered at. They were created solely for the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction which first opened on Disneyland on July 17, 1955 and were displayed on the attraction's last scene since its opening day.

Due to the popularity of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the attraction was later constructed at Magic Kingdom in Florida, still featuring the demons at the end of the attraction. However, despite the popularity and protests (especially in-park protests) over the attraction's permanent closure, all the demons were removed from the area which used to be Mr. Toad's Wild Ride since its closure on September 7, 1998, causing the attraction itself to be replaced by The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh which opened on June 4, 1999.

Appearances[]

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride[]

Disneyland[]

The red devils appear at the end of the attraction where they are encountered after the guests hit a train, causing them to end up in a scene representing Hell. Soon as they enter there, they encounter a demonic version of the Prosecutor who is heard laughing evilly as well as a group of devils attempting to attack the guests on their vehicle. Soon as the guests try to find their way out of the area, they manage to evade the demons as well as a demonic green dragon who attempts to breathe fire into the guests, but ends up having a bad cough, preventing him from breathing fire. Guests manage to escape the demons (especially the demonic version of the Prosecutor as well as the demonic dragon) just in time safely into the queue of the attraction without any harm.

Magic Kingdom[]

In either route which guests rode on in the former version, the scene where the red devils appeared was one of the last scenes encountered in the attraction. Like in its Disneyland counterpart, the devils were seen attempting to attack the guests who are on their vehicle. However, two larger demons (which were not featured in the California version) popped up on either side of the scene where they attempted to attack the guests, but they managed to evade the demons just in time safely into the loading area.

Trivia[]

  • One of the few characters in Disney history whose home is literally Hell.
  • In the video game Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, some of the new types of Toon Armor worn by the Hoppers are based on the devils from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. These variants can be found in the Floatyard area.
  • In a June 2020 post by the official D23 account, the demon prop used in the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction is labeled as "Cow Devil", despite the fact that they do not resemble cows at all due to the fact that all cows are female.[2]
