"Remote Possibilities" is the first segment of the thirty-ninth episode of Pepper Ann. It aired on February 17, 2000.

Synopsis[]

Nicky and Stuart try each other's hobbies out to gain perspective on their relationship.

Plot[]

Pepper Ann, Milo and Nicky go about their usual daily activities with Stuart occasionally passing them by. Stuart soon apologizes to Nicky for not being around a lot as he is busy trying to perfect his RC racing for a tournament. Nicky tries to console him and says that she hadn't noticed he was busy. Later that day at the Greezy N' Cheezy, Pepper Ann and Milo both tell Nicky that telling Stuart she "hadn't noticed" may have been harsh (as it implies indifference in their romantic life). Nicky swears off the idea, bringing up that she and Stuart have a "very open, communicative relationship". Once she sees a disheveled Stuart, unabashedly frustrated by Nicky's comment, she decides to go against her better judgement, and follow Pepper Ann's advice, leaving Milo with the bill.

The next day, Pepper Ann brings Nicky to the RC racetrack so she could hang out with Stuart at the RC track and pick up his hobby. The other racers laugh at her for not bringing her own car, but Stuart willingly lends her his first RC car, "Leona", which she crashes into Shelf McClain's car. Nicky ends up being forced to do his remedial math homework for a fortnight, while Stuart is stuck fixing Shelf's car as well as Leona. Stuart reassures her that she'll, hopefully, get better, but she is still further mocked by the other racers due to her inexperience.

At the Greezy N' Cheezy, Nicky admits that she hates Stuart's hobby and finds it a waste of time, but she (ironically) hides this from him. A thoughtless comment from Stuart describing his newly fixed Leona being "just like a woman: touchy and temperamental," sets her off, and she leaves angrily to do Shelf's math homework. Milo, who had spent the day at the "Magical Warriors of Narn" Convention, tries to suggest that Nicky only adopted Stuart's hobby in an effort to make him happy, and that they should instead embrace their differences. Pepper Ann wholly ignores this and takes Stuart out to try Nicky's hobby of music (buying a bassoon), sticking Milo with the bill once again.

The next morning, Stuart tries to serenade Nicky, but his horrible bassoon playing gives Nicky a rude awakening. Regardless, Nicky appreciates him taking it up, although he struggles dreadfully playing it. Over the next few days, the two both grow sicker of each other's hobbies, with Stuart literally running laps around Nicky at the RC track. While watching an orchestra, Stuart, uninterested in classical music, is more focused on fixing his car in time for the tourney, much to Nicky's bewilderment. After he absent-mindedly calls his bassoon stupid, a hurt Nicky insults back, and the two of them alert the conductor.

Nicky believes she has ruined her relationship with Stuart, but Milo tells her that their relationship was fine the way it was before. Realizing that Pepper Ann is the reason their relationship was nearly ruined, she tricks her into going to the Narnival with Milo. Nicky shows up at the RC track just as Stuart's main car conks out, and gives him a newly-fixed Leona. The two both apologize for their selfishness concerning their hobbies and reconcile their relationship. Stuart is still frustrated with Pepper Ann for nearly wrecking their relationship, but Nicky reassures that she hasn't been let off the hook; Pepper Ann is still stuck at the Narnival with Milo, having been forced to cosplay as Princess Ravine for the other convention goers to "rescue".
