Riptide, when not in use, resembles a plain BIC pen. When the button on it is clicked, it transforms into a glowing bronze sword. The sword is incredibly durable and able to withstand large forces of attack. Due to setting itself to Percy Jackson, he is incapable of losing it. Should he drop it or lose it anywhere, it will dematerialize and reappear on Percy's persons, mainly his pocket.
Appearance[]
Riptide first appeared as a pen that was given to Percy Jackson by Chiron who referred to it as "a mighty instrument". Percy's first time using was actually quite accidental. His pre-algebra teacher Mrs. Dodds, revealed herself as Alecto and immediately attacked him, only for Percy to instinctually summon the sword and stab her with it, causing her to dematerialize. Later, when the Minotaur seemingly kills Sally Jackson, Percy summoned the sword again to battle him, only to lose the pen. He discovers later through Chiron that the sword is bound to him.
Trivia[]
Interestingly, within the series, Percy doesn't name the sword like he does in the book. However, it was still referred to as Riptide within the marketing material.
When the teaser for the series was first released, the song "Riptide" by Vance Joy (covered by Stealth) was used as the trailer music, a reference to the sword itself. It is also seen among the Percy Jackson fanbase as the unofficial "theme" of the franchise.
