The River God is a character who appears in the 2008 Disney/Walden Media adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Background[]
The River God is a large deity who was composed entirely out of water. He is shown to take the face of a giant man with hair and a beard made of foam. When Aslan summons the deity, he is shown to obey Aslan's commands in punishing the Telmarine army for their abusive actions in building a bridge that trapped the deity. To this, the deity manages to help the Narnians win the war by the destroying the bridge and causing the Telmarines to surrender.
Role in the film[]
Around the time the Telmarines built a colony at Beruna, they built a bridge on the area where the River God lives, causing him to be trapped within the Telmarines' abusive actions in causing destruction across the environment.
Later when Aslan arrives at the fords during the battle between the Telmarines and the Old Narnians, he lets out a mighty roar against Sopespian and the Telmarines, furious of what the actions they did in attempting to conquer Narnia as well as what they did to the ford, causing them to stop. All of a sudden, Aslan summons the River God who rushes towards the bridge, causing the surviving Telmarines to retreat in fear. The River God then destroys the bridge the Telmarines built, engulfing the Telmarine army, followed by Sopespian being caught within the water, as the deity drowns him to death. The surviving Telmarines who were punished by the River God give up their weapons, as they surrender to the Narnians, ending the war. Afterwards, the water spirit makes a big splash and dissipates, causing the fords to be calm once more.
Trivia[]
- The effects used for the River God were made through Scanline Effects, a German visual effects company that developed a lot of water simulation software and the scene with the River God was one of the most challenging scenes in the film in using computer-generated water within the live-action scene.[1]
- The way the Telmarine army was defeated by the river deity appears to be a reference to the Biblical story of Moses. When Aslan summoned the river god to destroy the bridge who then defeats the Telmarine army, this is reminiscent of the Pharaoh and his army who were swept away into the tide. The deity himself also has a greater resemblance to Moses.
- According to Ben Barnes in the audio commentary for the 2008 Disney adaptation of Prince Caspian on the Blu-ray and DVD releases, the River God also slightly resembles Peter Dinklage as Trumpkin.[1]
