Robert Doyle "Rob" Marshall Jr. is an American director, producer, and choreographer, who directed several films, for Disney, such as he fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, the musicals Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns, and the 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Marshall also directed the Academy Award-winning film adaptation of the musical Chicago for Miramax Films.
Marshall was born in Madison, Wisconsin and attended the Falk School and then graduated in 1978 from Taylor Allderdice High School. He attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated in 1982. His family relocated to Pittsburgh and each found work in the city. Marshall worked in the Pittsburgh theatre scene, such as the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera while also teaching in at the University of Pittsburgh through their English department.
After injuring himself in a production, Marshall transitioned from dancer to choreographer and worked on shows, like Kiss of the Spider Woman, She Loves Me, Damn Yankees, and Victor/Victoria. He later found work with Disney as a choreographer on Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. Two years later, Marshall made his directing debut with the 1999 remake of Annie. While also directing and choreographing films, such as Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine, he also contributed to television specials related both the Academy Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors.
