Rocky Gibraltar is a character in the Toy Story franchise, first introduced in the 1995 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Toy Story.
Background[]
Personality[]
Being the strongest toy in Andy's room, Rocky is a tough wrestler action figure with great responsibility, especially when it comes to helping Woody and the rest of Andy's toys. Always prepared, he always does the hard work for Woody's allies such as the case of him cranking the handle of the Egg Man Movers truck. He is also famous for his airplane-spin maneuver.[2]
Physical appearance[]
Rocky is a small slender wrestling action figure wearing a gray wrestling mask. He wears a yellow tank top shirt around his body a pair of blue wrestling trunks, as well as a pair of wrestling boots matching the same color as his trunks. He also wears a yellow belt around him containing his namesake.
Appearances[]
Toy Story[]
Rocky is first seen during Andy's playtime, portraying a hostage held up by Mr. Potato Head (One-Eyed Bart). He then appears sitting in front of the door of Andy's room just before he and the other guests arrive, causing Rocky to be slammed against the wall after they leave. He is then seen during the "Strange Things" sequence working out with Buzz Lightyear and the other toys using dumbbells made from Tinker Toys. Later, he helps Buzz repair his cardboard spaceship using a tape dispenser being aided by Snake. After Woody accidentally knocked Buzz off the window, Rocky and the other toys accuse him for doing it intentionally, so he attempts to grab him on the hand with the other toys holding him hostage, but not before Andy (who is looking for Buzz) arrives at his room and bring Woody to Pizza Planet, causing the remaining toys to halt their attacks and retreat.
During the climax of the film when Woody and Buzz riding on RC to catch up with Andy's toys inside the Egg Man Movers truck, Rocky and the other toys think Woody is a traitor, rejecting him from the truck at first. However, as the other toys realized that Woody is trying to help Buzz, Rocky and the other toys realize that they made a mistake, so they work together to rescue them. In this case, Bo Peep works together with Rocky who cranks the handle to lower down a ramp to help Woody and Buzz get to the truck, only for RC's batteries to run out. However, Woody, Buzz, RC, Rocky, and the rest of the toys manage to move to Andy's new house. Later during Christmas, Rocky is last seen celebrating the holidays with the other toys.
Toy Story 2[]
Rocky is first seen attempting to keep Buster out of Andy's room, although it proved too much for them. He then notices Woody captured by a toy collector named "Al McWhiggin" during a yard sale, although he is not part of Buzz's rescue team. He then assists Robot and Wheezy, pleading to Buzz to help rescue Woody. Later when Woody returns with Jessie and Bullseye, Rocky and the other toys are last seen enjoying Wheezy performing a cover of "You've Got a Friend in Me".
Toy Story 3[]
Rocky only appears in one of Mrs. Davis' home videos at the beginning of the film. However, in the present when Andy grew up and became too old to play with his toys, Rocky was revealed to have been sold with the rest of the other toys as revealed during Woody's last staff meeting with the rest of Andy's remaining toys.
Other appearances[]
Rocky also appears in an interstitial for Good Morning America, amongst the rest of Andy's toys, as a means to promote Toy Story 2.
Video game appearances[]
Toy Story[]
Rocky appears as a non-playable character in the video game adaptation of the film. In the first level "That Old Army Game", he is seen working with Robot gathering the baby monitor for the Green Army Men's report about Andy's birthday presents. He also appears in the next level "Red Alert!", where the player must clear away the obstacles blocking his path so he can push away a bucket blocking RC's path and once done so, Rocky and RC return to their positions under the bed before Andy returns after Woody helped the toys hide with an alert of Andy coming to his room.
Rocky also appears in "Revenge of the Toys" as one of the toys who turned against Woody believing he knocked Buzz off the window. As Rex was trying to cross Andy's room during the level, he ends up being strained by Rocky. The player must have Woody to counter this attack so Rex can escape. In the Game Boy version of the level, Rocky was omitted in said level, even though it was present in the Game Boy port.
Toy Story 2: The Video Game[]
In the video game adaptation of Toy Story 2, Rocky helps Buzz on his mission to rescue Woody. He appears in the level "Airport Infiltration", where he gives out a racing mission to Buzz in helping him find his lost dumbbells. Once the player completes this task, Rocky will award Buzz a Pizza Planet token.
Disney Parks[]
Toy Story Parade[]
Rocky was one of the toys featured during the discontinued Toy Story Parade at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which was used to promote the original film when it was in theaters. He was seen as a non-meetable walkaround character occasionally walking alongside Bo Peep, her sheep, and a Troll doll.
