Rogue Squadron is an upcoming American space opera film directed by Patty Jenkins and written by Matthew Robinson.
Synopsis[]
The story was intended to introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy. Lock S-foils in attack position: Rogue Squadron arrives in theaters Christmas 2023.[1]

According to an IGN interview with Patty Jenkins, Rogue Squadron will be an entirely new and original story and loosely an adaptation of the novel and video game series.[2]
During an interview for Wonder Woman 1984 on December 14, 2020, Patty Jenkins confirmed that a writer was already hired for Rogue Squadron, and that he has been working on the film's story treatment "for awhile," and that the treatment was nearly finished.[3]
According to The Wall Street Journal, Disney CEO Bob Iger wants this to be more accessible to general audiences than the company's previous Star Wars projects.[4]
On June 1, 2021, it was reported that Aline Bonetto had been hired as the production designer for the film.[5]
On June 25, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Lucasfilm had hired Matthew Robinson to write the screenplay for the film. Pre-production will begin this fall, with a targeted 2022 filming start date.[6]
On November 8, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported the film would be delayed.
On February 25, 2022, it was reported that the film would not be delayed, despite previous reports.[7]
On May 27, 2022, in an interview with Total Film Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the next film in the Star Wars saga is not Rogue Squadron.[8]
On March 7, 2023, Variety reported that the film had been officially shelved.[9]
On March 13, 2024, in an interview with Collider, Patty Jenkins revealed that the film was no longer cancelled, and is yet again in active development after signing a new deal with Lucasfilm.[10]
Trivia[]
- The film shares the same title of the video game series, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Three games in the series were released from 1998 to 2003 by Nintendo 64 and GameCube.
