Brother Roland is a character whose name appeared in the Haunted Mansion attraction.
Background[]
Roland was a man who was buried in the crypt in the Gracey Manor grounds where his remains were placed within the resting places of Mister Frees, Ken, and Uncle Blaine. He died of an unknown cause along with the rest of the aforementioned people who were buried in this place.
Development[]
On February 27, 2024 (Rolly Crump's birthday), it was announced that a bust of Roland would be created for the Haunted Mansion Parlor set to open onboard the Disney Treasure with an opening date on December 21, 2024, the same day said ship begins its voyage, almost a year after Crump passed away on March 12, 2023. Disney Parks Blog stated that the Roland bust was being crafted at a dedicated Walt Disney Imagineering workshop at Walt Disney World.[1]
Appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
Roland is one of the victims who were buried within the crypt area of the Haunted Mansion. His name can be seen alongside those of Mister Frees, Ken, and Uncle Blaine engraved within the same crypt itself.
Haunted Mansion Parlor[]
The Roland bust was placed in the Haunted Mansion Parlor onboard the Disney Treasure. The bust itself is depicted with melting candle wax located on the right side of the face. The plaque located on the bottom of the bust reads, "Brother Roland – Forever Remembered For Embracing the Weird", in honor of Rolly Crump's contribution to the Haunted Mansion attraction which originated as "Museum of the Weird" during development of the attraction.
Trivia[]
- Roland's name is a tribute to the late Rolly Crump who passed away on March 12, 2023. Crump's name was also referenced on the tombstone of Rolo Rumkin in the Disneyland version of Haunted Mansion.
- Roland also shares the name with Roland Keep, a character from the Disney Kingdoms comic Seekers of the Weird, which in turn is a tribute to Crump himself with the comics being based on the scrapped Museum of the Weird attraction.
- The melted candle wax located on the right side of the Roland bust in the Haunted Mansion Parlor is an homage to the Candleman who was also deleted from the Museum of the Weird attraction.
