Rose is a character featured on the 1993 Disney educational short Recycle Rex.
Background[]
Personality[]
Rose is shown to have a care for clean environments. She is shown to teach the value of ethics when it comes to those who do the wrong ways of taking care of the Earth, like the case of Knock and Ping who are littering aluminum soda cans, warning them that the more they litter, the more they pollute the Earth.
Physical appearance[]
Rose is an anthropomorphic daisy with a face on her yellow disc and seven white petals around her. She also has a green stem that she uses as a body, as well as two leaves that she uses as arms.
Role in the short[]
Rose is first seen standing at the End of the Earth, warning Knock and Ping not to litter the aluminum soda cans they are holding, explaining to them it can cause more pollution to the environment. She then tosses a quarter onto a coin-operated binoculars so that they can see what can happen if they do not take care of the Earth. Just as they see for themselves using the binoculars, all what the Stomper Twins can see is nothing, as in no natural landscapes around them. She then educates the twins about the importance of natural resources as she holds a natural resources meter of how much there are left, which she shows them that the meter is currently in the "Not so good" position. As a result, she warns them to find a way to fix the problem to avoid ending up in this situation. Just as Ping asks Rose of why she arrived at the edge of the mountain, she explains that it takes a precious resource like her to keep an eye on those who litter and are careless about taking care of the Earth.
Rose later appears at the end of the short during the "Close the Loop" musical sequence, where she briefly appears in the baseball field, encouraging Rex and his friends that they can be inspired in helping keep the Earth clean. She then comments about seeing effortless players, the Pansies winning against the Tiger Lilies, just as she commands Rex and his friends to listen to her.
Trivia[]
- Rose's name is quite ironic, as she does not resemble an actual rose at all (a flower part of the Rosa genus) but rather an actual daisy. Her name is also a pun on the given name "Rose" as well as a plant of the same name.
- She is the only character in the short to be voiced by a celebrity as well as the only character whose voice actress is directly credited (in this case, Eileen Brennan).
- Despite her short amount of screen time, Brennan was featured in the voice cast of the short.
- At one point, Rose is seen doing the "We can do it" pose, which is a reference to a campaign poster, only that she is doing it to help Rex and his friends keep the Earth clean.
- How Rose is capable of making her way to other places by herself is exactly unclear, such as the End of the Earth area set within a mountain formation or the baseball field, despite her being a flower.
