Rosie Morales[1] is a character who was featured in the 2022 Disney+ original film Sneakerella.
Background[]
Rosie was El's late mother. She served as the owner of the shoe store Laces and was loved by everyone, especially the store she founded. She supported her son in helping him pick the right sneaker for a right person during her life with El at Laces. However, at one point throughout her life, Rosie became very sick and later died from her illness[2]. After she died, Gustavo continued to watch over El, reminding him that he is always here to support him like Rosie.
Ever since Rosie's death, it had an impact throughout El's life while living with his stepfather Trey who began to run the sneaker store, where his stepson faced many challenges without his mother while working at Laces. Years later, a workshop dedicated to El's mother was kept a secret until El discovered it. Additionally, a rose brand in Gustavo's garden was named "Rosie's Roses" in honor of Rosie who was loved by all.
Role in the film[]
Aside from mentions, Rosie only appears in flashback sequences throughout the entire film during occasions where El recaps the moments he had with his mother. In the "Work Up" sequence, Rosie was seen helping her son make the right sneaker for the right person, living in a happy life where she supported her son throughout her life. However, at one point, Rosie became sick from an illness, as she was seen coughing where her son spent his last moments with his mother just before she left with Trey escorting his wife on a taxi while Gustavo closes the back door of the cab. However, after his mother left, Gustavo came to watch over El, which reminded El that just like his mother, Gustavo would always here to support him. Over life, Trey negotiated with Foot Locker to turn his wife's shoe store into a Foot Locker store if El doesn't remain productive, which later resulted Laces in the state of going out of business. When El found a hidden workshop dedicated to his mother, El finds his childhood drawings he had with his mother, where he remembers what his mother told him in finding the right sneaker to the right person just before El began to design sneakers after being inspired by his childhood drawings.
Despite having to endure the challenges he faced, El kept his kind, positive nature and finally found the happiness he sought simply by keeping faith in his dreams years alter, when he tried to explain to his stepfather of why he never showed his sneakers to him, El explained that he should have never lied about the challenges he had ever since his mother's death, apologizing for his bad reputation over his life while giving his stepson a second chance. In the aftermath, Rosie's store was saved, in which Laces was transformed into an "El-evate" store, themed after the brand.
Trivia[]
- Rosie's death is similar to Cinderella's Father's death from the 1950 film, making Rosie the female counterpart to him.
