At the age of 17 he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, but national service interrupted his studies. By the late 1950s, Kinnear established himself as a stage and radio actor before gaining wider recognition as a participant in the television show That Was the Week That Was.

Some of his notable film credits included The Millionairess, Sparrows Can't Sing, Heavens Above!, Help!, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Deadly Affair, How I Won the War, The Bed Sitting Room, Taste the Blood of Dracula, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, Scrooge, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, Juggernaut, Watership Down, and Pirates. His most recognized film roles were Veruca Salt's father in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Planchet in The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers, and The Return of the Musketeers.

While making of The Return of the Musketeers, Kinnear fell from a horse and sustained a broken pelvis and internal bleeding. He was taken to hospital in Madrid, but died the next day from a heart attack, brought on by his injuries.
