"Run Silent, Run Deep" is the sixth episode of the Disney+ streaming television series The Mysterious Benedict Society, and the sixth episode of the series overall. It was released on July 23, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Benedict and Curtain's indelibly intertwined pasts are revealed.
Plot[]
30 years ago, young Nicholas and Nathaniel spend their youth in the orphanage hoping to get adopted. While Nathaniel is confident and extroverted, Nicholas is withdrawn and introverted. Eventually, a kindly couple arrive to adopt, but are only able to adopt one of them. They pick Nicholas due to his quiet nature. As he leaves with his new family, he promises Nathaniel that he will come back for him.
In the present, Mr. Benedict sends Milligan off to rescue the children from the institute via a submarine that they just so happen to own. Mr. Benedict continues to display forlorning as Number Two and Rhonda try to figure out what is on his mind. While building a bunk bed, Mr. Benedict comes out and admits the truth to both of his assistants. He was not just taken by the house he was adopted into, he was also just happy to have some peace and quiet and the ability to read without his brother pestering him. He had the opportunity to ask his adoptive parents to go back for Nathaniel, but he remained silent and has regretted it since. He offers Rhonda and Number Two an out, but they choose to remain loyal to him.
Milligan travels smoothly in his submarine, but it soon begins to experience minor problems that eventually grow into major leaks. He manages to successfully plug up the holes, but runs into Dr. Curtain's underwater wind turbines and crashes into them; knocking off the motor and causing his submarine to sink to the bottom of the river.
Meanwhile, Sticky begins to show some gratitude towards the Whisperer despite its purpose. The other children recognize this, but withhold their tongues. Dr. Curtain, seeing that Sticky is more welcoming to the machine has Jackson and Jillson fetch him and put him into the Whisperer again, much to his delight. Reynie decides to talk with Dr. Curtain's son S.Q. for information while Kate decides to ask Martina about her new position as an executive. Reynie tells Constance to "stay the course", but as she gets up to leave, she suddenly hears Sticky's voice in the Whisperer and abruptly leaves the Institute.
Ms. Perumal gets her mother to stop watching TV for once, but as they sit down to eat, Sticky's voice from the Whisperer seemingly orders her to go out and shop. Resistant, but confused, Ms. Perumal follows her mother. Ms. Perumal tries to shop for beets, but the vendor cynically reminds her of the possible drought. Her mother eagerly gets in line a boutique to shop for, of all things, a blue beret which everyone obsessively begins to buy. Constance, having arrived in Stonetown via the barge, steals a beret for herself before heading back to the Institute.
Kate starts to get friendly with Martina and takes up her offer to watch a major tetherball championship match on television in her room. Having become an executive, she no longer has to share one with a roommate. She explains that in her new position, she gets access to certain areas of the institute and has the "privilege" of dusting of the labs. The only way in is with a card key with patterned holes in it. Kate watches the game with Martina in her room and when she is not looking, sneaks her card key and recreates the pattern of holes on her hand with a pen. Martina, none the wiser, gives Kate a tetherball keychain she made.
Reynie speaks with S.Q. and learns that he has a secret section of forest he goes to to draw. Reynie asks if he can accompany him, but he tells him that Dr. Curtain, who was friends with his birth father, will not allow guests. He attempts to ask him anyway, but he tells him that "friends" will have hidden motives. S.Q. is disappointed, but Reynie persists and suggests that it is "easier to apologize than it is to ask permission". Reynie later meets up with Sticky who is more confident about being a Messenger. When Reynie attempts to remind him that the Whisperer is evil, Sticky accuses him of being jealous. He later goes to have lunch with Dr. Curtain where he feigns being close to Reynie, though he suspects otherwise.
Reynie and S.Q. travel through the woods until they come across the section of forest. Reynie looks through S.Q.'s binoculars and discovers that the "trees" are actually radio towers of some kind. S.Q. explains that they are for some purpose that will happen in 22 hours from now and that he has been told to stay away from them because they supposedly cause tumors. Back at the Institute, Dr. Curtain and Dr. Garrison have a congratulatory celebration over the next days events.
Kate perfectly recreates Martina's card as she, Reynie and Sticky recollect what they know. Suddenly, Constance returns with her beret and accuses Sticky of making her go buy it with the Whisperer. Realizing that the Dr. Curtain now plans to use it for mind control, Reynie suggests that they put a stop to him now. Sticky believes that they can repurpose the Whisperer with good thoughts, but when Constance accuses him of now being part of a cult, he yells at her. Kate wanting to waste no time and believing that the group is a lost cause, ventures on her own to dismantle the Whisperer.

Trivia[]
- The title refers to how Milligan described how his efforts will be in retrieving the children.

- The majority of this episode is invented for the series with the only chapter covered being chapter 30 in the first book.
Book comparisons[]
- Mr. Benedict and Mr. Curtain's backstory is never totally addressed in the book. All that is known is that they are of Dutch origin and that they were raised separately.
- Sticky never builds a confidence that pushes him away from his friends. Throughout the book, he is always nervous, but continues to push through to the end.
- Ms. Perumal's entire side story is invented for the series.
- In the book, S.Q. interacts with the children as an Executive and does not have much of a personal life. In the series, he and Reynie develop a close bond and he is shown to be close with Dr. Curtain as an adoptive son after his actual father died.
- Kate sets off on her own to take down the lab because she feels that the group is falling apart. In the book, she sets out on her own simply so she can find the computer room entrance and then report back to the rest of the team.
