Sage and the Journey to Wishworld is the first book from the main Star Darlings book series. It was released on September 15, 2015.

Synopsis[]

Welcome to Starling Academy. Twelve very special students have been selected from this year's class to reclaim the wish energy that powers their beloved planet, Starland. The Star Darlings, as they are known, take classes where they learn how to grant the wishes made on birthday candles, shooting stars, dandelions, wishbones, and coins tossed into fountains, just to name a few.

Their top-secret mission will take them to Wishworld (known in some places as Earth). There they will have to find the Wisher and figure out how to grant the wish before time runs out and they are stuck on Wishworld forever. Sage is the first Star Darling soaring off to Wishworld. Travel with her as she discovers how challenging life on a new planet can be and how she learns the importance of friendship, teamwork and never assuming anything.

Story[]

Preparation[]

Selection of the Wish granter[]

During her Wishful Thinking class, Sage received a holo-text describing the first discovered wish orb. She sought for a leave of absence right away and proceeded to Lady Stella's office. The Headmistress then took the Star Darlings to the Wish Cavern from there. There were twelve wish orbs in situ, and one of them was ready for fulfilment. As soon as the orb selected her, Sage started getting ready for the mission.

Prepping and Journey[]

The following night, Sage and Cassie used the Wishworld Outfit Selector app to go through the selections before deciding on a pair of blue trousers, a pair of lavender sneakers, a purple blouse with a glittering butterfly design, and a cropped jacket. The chosen attire was saved on Sage's Star-zap as she prepared for bed.

The following day, Sage and the other Star Darlings waited for a passing comet at the Wishworld Surveillance Deck while donning safety glasses. While Lady Stella gave Sage her parting advice, the other Star Darlings wished her well. Sage was given the reassurance by Lady Stella that she would keep an eye on the mission time and the energy levels of her pendant. She then called for Lady Cordial, who gave her a lavender purse with a soft heart-shaped keychain. Sage was finally reminded by Lady Stella of her mirror mantra, and after saying goodbye to everyone, she walked towards the star and headed to Wishworld.

Mission[]

Search for the Wisher[]

Sage put her protective star spectacles in her backpack after altering her appearance and landed to Wishworld. She then folded the star. After that, she found her wisher with the aid of her star-zap, which brought her to a school. A janitor stopped Sage as she approached the building and threatened to give her detention. She escaped thanks to a costume change and the young Starlings' capacity to mind-control older Wishlings.

When she arrived at the class, she used mind control on the teacher, convincing her that she was the new student and joining the lesson.

She went to the school cafeteria after the lesson and helped herself to some mac and cheese. When some of the girls in Sage's class ask her to sit with them, she is unsure of what to do. After some time, the girls began teasing Genevieve and Jane, telling her not to approach Genevieve and describing Jane, another new student, as strange. Jenna explains that despite Jane inviting everyone to her birthday celebration, nobody wanted to show up. Sage made the decision to go to her table and speak with Jane in order to confirm that Jane was her wisher. But when she turned to see if her wish pendant was shining, she stumbled into Genevieve. Sage offered to attend and assist with party setup after asking Jane whether the birthday celebration was her heart's desire.

Fulfilling Jane's Wish[]

Sage later learns her Wish mission power—mind reading—while attempting to persuade the girls in her class to attend the party. After using the power, however, Sage felt somewhat worn out. Sage visited Jane's house after school to make plans for her birthday celebration. Sage discovered a lovely T-shirt that Jane had self-tie-dyed in the girls' room. Sage creates a party idea while Sage is hand-decorating a T-shirt after Jane demonstrates how she did it.

After spending the night at Jane's house, they went to school together wearing new T-shirts, attracting positive attention from their classmates. They ask Sage where she got the shirt, to which Sage tells them they can make their own at Jane's birthday party. At first, their classmates look awkwardly at each other, but they eventually decide to come to Jane's birthday.

During the lunch break, Genevieve approached Sage and Jane's table (which caused a sudden burst of energy in Sage). Genevieve compliments Sage and Jane's matching shirts, but the two misinterpret her for being sarcastic, which makes Sage angry. After Sage tells Genevieve to leave them alone, Genevieve reluctantly agrees, then she looks down at her dress and notices chocolate milk all over it! Genevieve storms off, making Sage feel remorse and sad.

Later that night, Sage spends the night in a special tent, which she set up thanks to the star zap. The tent was equipped with all possible comforts and was invisible to Wishling.

Locating the Real Wisher[]

On the day of Jane's birthday party, Sage was getting ready for the party when she heard the doorbell ring. She headed to the door and was surprised to discover Tessa behind it. Tessa explained to Sage that Lady Stella sent her to Wishworld due to her low energy levels, which indicated an abnormal mission. However, Sage was confident that the wish would come true in a moment, which did not happen. Sage then began to reflect on the sequence of events and realized that her wish pendant had shone near Genevieve, so she immediately ran to her real wisher.

In Genevieve's house, the two girls clarified the disagreement - Genevieve explained that she didn't even know why everyone thought she was mean, which was not true, and that she liked Jane's T-shirts. She added that she knew how to improve them. With Sage's encouragement, Genevieve agrees to take the decorations and go to the party. On the spot, Genevieve proved to her classmates that she was indeed a nice girl, thanks to which her wish came true. Sage's star-zap informed her about the completion of the mission. Sage stayed with Tessa a bit longer to see Jane blow out the candles on her cake.

Just before Sage left back to Starland, she said goodbye to Jane and Genevieve, revealing to them her actual appearance. However, when Sage gave the two a big hug, their memories were erased, forgetting all about Sage.

Aftermath[]

Back at Starling Academy, Lady Stella presented Sage with her wish orb, which turned into a lavender boheminella - Sage's wish blossom. The wish blossom also came with Lavenderite, a power crystal that Sage could keep.
