Prove You're the Best.
―The Scare Games' slogan.

The Scare Games is a competition with different events to put a monster's scaring skills to the test. It is pivotal in the 2013 Disney/Pixar animated film, Monsters University.

In the film's universe, the Scare Games were founded by Abigail Hardscrabble when she was a student of MU, and she won them four years in a row. The two main rules/requirements for the overall competition are that you have to be part of a fraternity or a sorority in order to compete and you have to at least six monsters on a team—even if one member is technically two monsters who share the same body (i.e., Oozma Kappa was initially barred from competing before Sulley joined because Terri and Terry Perry counted as one member since the two brothers share the same body). In the film, six teams competed:

Jaws Theta Chi
  • Dirk Pratt
  • Roy "Big Red" O'Growlahan
  • Omar Harris
  • George Sanderson
  • Percy Boleslaw
  • Baboso Goretega (absent)
Python Nu Kappa
  • Naomi Jackson
  • Carrie Williams
  • Heather Olson
  • Crystal Du Bois
  • Britney Davis
  • Taylor Holbrook
Slugma Slugma Kappa
  • Violet Steslicki
  • Donna Soohoo
  • Brynn Larson
  • Maria Garcia
  • Carla Delgado
  • Debbie Gabler
Roar Omega Roar
Eta Hiss Hiss
  • Rosie Levin
  • Nadya Petrov
  • Sonia Lewis
  • Susan Jensen
  • Rhonda Boyd
  • Nancy Kim
Oozma Kappa

After the introduction of laughter as a more reliable and efficient source of energy, Hardscrabble properly changes the Scare Games into the Laugh or Comedy Games in which participants try to compete in games that represent the principles of comedy to make a child laugh.

Official Description

The Scare Games is an annual competition between the fraternities and sororities to prove who are the scariest monsters.

For the teams to know about the events, they get a riddle/rhyme which gives them a clue what the event will be and where it will take place.

Avoid the Parent

"If a kid hears you coming, they'll call Mom or Dad, then you'd better run fast or things will get bad."

The Library

When scaring, don't alert the parents and get caught.

Grab their team's flag from a statue and get out, all without disturbing the librarian.

Don't Scare the Teen

"To frighten a child is the point of a scare. If you frighten a teen, then scarer beware."

In a Maze

Avoid scaring teenagers.

Run through a maze and scare kid pictures, but don't scare the teen pictures.

Hide and Sneak

"Someone is coming, this could ruin your night; stay hidden, take cover, and stay out of sight."

In the ΣΚΘ House

Keep yourself hidden so you don't get caught when scaring.

Hide in the fraternity house from a referee and escape without getting found.

Simulated Scare

"Every one of your skills will be put to the test. The Scare Simulator will prove who's the best."

The Scaring Stadium with 2 Scare Simulators

How scary are you?

One by one, team members go head to head in Scare Simulators, set to the very highest difficulty level.
