History[]
Pre-2007 revamp[]
The Living Seas first opened on January 15, 1986, where the exit of the attraction consisted of the SeaBase Alpha aquarium, where guests disembarked from their vehicles to explore the aquarium. Guests could explore the largest saltwater tank in the world consisting of various sorts of marine life seen in the aquarium interior. This, however, was surpassed in 2005 since the opening of Georgia Aquarium, where it exhibited the largest saltwater aquarium in the world consisting of various assorted marine life. Also featured in the original incarnation of the SeaBase attraction was a 20-passenger elevator that took guests a 30-second trip to the ocean floor, while the floor beneath them was shaking. The original incarnation additionally included a model undersea research facility, which was not in the post-2007 revamp.
As of December 2003, Disney began to retheme the Living Seas attraction based on the recently-released Disney/Pixar animated film, Finding Nemo, resulting in a transformation to the pavilion itself as of January 2004. The attraction Turtle Talk with Crush was added into the aquarium's interior on November 16, 2004, replacing the former Module 1C (or Earth Systems) exhibit, which resulted in a success in a plan to move the attraction to a larger area of the pavilion. The attraction used in the facility was only the beginning of revamping The Living Seas. The Living Seas, alongside the SeaBase Alpha aquarium, closed for a major refurbishment. Turtle Talk with Crush moved into a larger space following the transformation of "The Living Seas" to "The Seas with Nemo & Friends", which opened on January 4, 2007.
Post-2007 revamp[]
After one year and five months of closure in the facility, SeaBase had a major transformation on January 4, 2007, making it the first Pavilion to be dedicated to an animated movie property, as well as the second Epcot attraction to be based on an animated movie (in this case, Finding Nemo); the first one was Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable themed after the 1994 Disney animated film, The Lion King at The Land Pavilion since its opening in 1995, replacing Symbiosis. Like in its predecessor, guests disembark from the attraction into the aquarium where they come across one of the world's largest saltwater aquarium tanks all across the interior of the aquarium. The capsule elevator that provided a 30-second trip to the ocean floor in this current incarnation of the attraction has been removed as of today.
