I'm not an explorer. I'm a farmer.
―Searcher Clade

Searcher Clade is the main protagonist of the 2022 Disney animated feature film Strange World.

Background[]

Searcher Clade was born on a continent known as "Avalonia" to Penelope and Jaeger Clade. Growing up, Searcher was taken on many expeditions by his father who was one of Avalonia's famous explorers. But during their explorations, Searcher began to become interested in some of the plants, yet due to the expectations of his father and the dangers he encountered when going on explorations, Searcher never got a chance to enjoy the world around as he grew up.

Official Description[]

Searcher Clade is a treasured member of the Avalonia community having discovered a revolutionary plant-based power source called pando. These days, he farms the plant, providing energy to the entire community. Above all though, Searcher is a family man: he loves a spontaneous middle-of-the-kitchen dance with his wife, Meridian, and he vowed long ago that he would do anything for his son, Ethan. Searcher has worked hard to create a solid and secure life for his family, so when he finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission, his cool confidence escapes him... Searcher is caught between the legacy of the greatest explorer of all time and his own legacy he established almost in contrast to that of his father, who he sees as a rambling, intrepid explorer who was never home... Searcher set out to be the opposite. He's rooted in his family.
―Don Hall describing Searcher[1]

Personality[]

Though he was born into a family of adventurers, Searcher prefers to admire the plant life during the expeditions his father takes him on. Searcher is very curious, which leads him to discover a plant called "Pando", which he could use the botany of to generate electricity to Avalonia, showing his need to provide for his home and community. Searcher also showed great nobility and humbleness as he decided to accompany Callisto Mal to discover the cause of Pando dying, showing even though he no longer wanted to go adventures, he was willing to go on one just to save his community and family.

As a young boy, Searcher was loyal to his father to accompany him on his expeditions, despite showing no interest in them. In addition, Searcher shared a complicated relationship with his father where he was annoyed by Jaeger's ego and that he would spend his life going on adventures rather than spending time with him and his mother. When discovering Pando, Searcher's pressure finally reached its limit where he revealed he did not want to be an explorer like his father; thus causing Jaeger to disappear from his life for twenty-five years.

After growing into an adult, Searcher had become a devoted family man where he showed affection towards his wife and son. Searcher was willing to provide his family and community by growing and reproducing Pando to provide them electricity while not letting the idea of fame get into his head, much like his father did. When discovering Avalonia to be a gigantic, living creature and Pando was actually a threat as it was killing the creature, Searcher was willingly to sacrifice his reputation and legacy by destroying the plant he discovered just for his son. This goes to show that Searcher cares more about his family than fame, legacy, and discoveries.

As a family man, Searcher dedicated himself to caring for his son, Ethan whom he deeply loved as Searcher wanted him to his own person, something which he had felt his own father did not seem to let him do. While Searcher loved and accepted Ethan for who he is, he did intend to embarrass his son in front of his friends and crush, Diazo without recognizing the boundaries Ethan had for his age. Searcher also failed to consider what Ethan wanted to do for the rest of his life, believing that being a farmer was the option and fearing Ethan would become just like his grandfather. However, during an argument with Ethan, in which Ethan used the exact words he told his own father before they parted ways, Searcher realized he had become exactly like Jaeger by not considering what Ethan wanted to be and what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. As a result, Searcher apologized and reconciled with Ethan, allowing him to live a life away from their farm while maintaining his strong relationship with him.

Physical appearance[]

Searcher's physical appearance consists of having white skin, brown hair, hazel eyes, a large nose, and large ears. He bears more resemblance to his father, Jaeger in physical appearance while possessing his mother's eyes.

As a young teen, Searcher wore a brown winter jacket with fur, pants boots, and gloves while carrying a large brown backpack. His face covered in light freckles to signify his youth.

As an adult, Searcher wore a green tunic shirt with gray sleeves, turquoise baggy pants with knee pads, a red sash around his waist, and navy blue sneakers. His hair grew longer and had facial hair on his face while his nose became slightly larger.

Appearances[]

Strange World[]

Searcher first appears as young boy accompanying his father, Jaeger, President Callisto Mal, and a team of explorers on an expedition through Avalonia's mountains which are impossible to travel through as many explorers had died trying to reach the other side of the mountains surrounding Avalonia.

Once Upon a Studio[]

After the employees at the Walt Disney Animation Studios leave, Searcher and his family join all of the Disney characters to take a group photo to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Disney.
