This article is about the Marvel character also known as The Void. For other articles, see Void (disambiguation).

I am the Void. There's no use fighting.
―Sentry[src]

Robert "Bob" Reynolds (also known as Sentry and The Void) is a Marvel Comics character that appears in Thunderbolts* as the main antagonist, who later reforms.

Bob has been fighting darkness and addiction his whole life, which led to him asking for help. This help led to him becoming a test subject for "project Sentry" and become known as Sentry, whom Valentina Allegra de Fontaine plans to make the next "World's mightiest hero.". When Bob meets Yelena Belova, John Walker, Bucky Barnes, Eva Starr, and Alexi Shostakov, they help him deal with his mental health and help him deal with the darkness within him, which can manifest into becoming The Void. Bob then joins his new friends and forms the Thunderbolts, who are later known as the New Avengers.

Sentry was created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee.

Background[]

When Robert was growing up, he lived with his parents, but his father would abuse both Bob and his mother. This experience led to addiction for Bob and he had a lot of dark moments in his life, which led to blackouts. One day in teenhood, he was approached by someone who offered to help him with his addiction and told him about the chace to be a test subject for an experiment named Project Sentry, which gave Bob the chance to fix his mistakes, or so he thought, and help him deal with his addiction and struggles throughout life. During Bob's teen years, he worked at Alfrido's Bail Bonds as a summer job, while he was addicted to meth and worked as a mascot there for some time. This was one of the things that later traumatised Reynolds, as established in the Void.

Personality[]

Bob's Personality[]

When he is himself, Bob is shown to be more causious and because he grew up in an abusive household, Bob is emotionally withdrawn. He appears to have some childhood demeanor, which is specifically shown when he is in the Void. Bob is seen wearing his childhood clothes while in there, which hints that he always sees himself as a child in some ways, as the Void gives him his worst moments in his life. Due to his abusive upbringing, Bob is shown to suffer from extreme mood swings, but no matter what he desires to be a hero deep down, and is willing to sacrifice himself for the Yelena, John and Eva, despite only just meeting them. After having gone through his trauma, it is shown that Bob suffers from memory loss, especially when he has become the Void.

Void's Personality[]

The Void is shown to be a lot more dark and sinister as it manifests from Bob's darkest moments and trauma. The Void likes to take advantage of Bob's emotions and loneliness, as well as seemingly feeding on his insecurities. The Void likes to make him feel worse than the state Bob is already in and to taunt him, especially when it says that he will alone no matter what, despite Bob fighting the darkness inside him and his new friends helping him.

Powers and Abilities[]

As Sentry[]

He's invincible, all powerful. Stronger than all the Avengers rolled into one.
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine talking about Sentry

As a subject of Project Sentry, Bob was injected with a trial drug (possibly a version of the Super-Soldier Serum), which resulted in him developing a dual-personality known as "The Void" and superhuman abilities soon after.

  • Flight: Sentry has the ability to fly. He is able to manipulate her own gravitational field to generate thrust and propel herself at supersonic speeds, much faster than she can travel by foot. He can also levitate using this ability.
  • Superhuman Strength: Sentry is stronger than the average human. This power allowed him bend U.S. Agent's shield and rip Winter Soldier's vibranium arm off.
  • Invulnerability: Sentry is more durable than the average human. His body is virtually indestructible to all Earthly weapons, with bullets simply ricocheting whenever they come into contact with his skin. He is also immune to most forms of extreme punishment, as seen when he was completely unaffected by attacks from the Thunderbolts.
  • Matter Manipulation: Sentry has an as of yet untapped capacity to affect matter in undisclosed but seemingly unlimited ways.
  • Regeneration: Sentry can heal himself from virtually all injuries.
  • Superhuman Speed: Sentry possesses the ability to move at hyper-sonic speeds, both through flight and on foot.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Sentry is able to be more active longer normal humans and most other enhanced individuals; without the need to rest.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Sentry is able to react at above superhuman speeds, responding to attacks within seconds.
  • Telepathy: Sentry is able to enter people's minds by touching them and visualizing their most traumatic memories, placing them in a sort of trance.
  • Telekinesis: Sentry has the ability to mentally manipulate and levitate objects and individuals with the use of his psionic powers. He is able to break a cup using his mind, if he really focuses.
  • Heat Generation: Sentry can consciously raise the temperature of his body to super-heat water and boil it. He can also melt guns using this powers.

As The Void[]

The Void, both as a part of the Sentry and a separate entity, possesses several superhuman abilities.

  • Darkness Manipulation: The Void has massive control over darkness, allowing him to manipulate, control, and harness shadows. Using this powers, the Void can envelop his surroundings in complete darkness and generate a huge shadow which can cover an entire portion of New York City.
  • Telepathy: Those impaled on his Darkness experience traumatic visions of the past.
  • Resurrection: The Void is able to resurrect himself (Sentry) and bring him back to life.

Appearances[]

Thunderbolts*[]

Sentry appears in the film, making his MCU debut in the film. When Yelena Belova is sent on a mission by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, she is sent to a highly secured vault, where she finds Ghost, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster. The group fight as they have all been sent by Val to kill each other, but Bob appears, which greatly confuses everyone. Bob introduces himself, but has no idea how he got to the vault or why he is there. After Taskmaster's death, the rest try to figure out why Val lied to them and wanted them to kill each other. Bob explains that he has been in the vault for as long as he can remember but agrees to help everyone else get out as he wants to leave as well. They soon work together to try and escape, but when Yelena and John touch Bob, they have visions of traumatic/sad moments in their life. Bob shows Yelena the time she led another black widower to her death while in the red room as a child, and for John, it was when his marriage to Olivia Walker started to fall apart, while their son was a toddler.

The team works together to try and escape and while Bob asks what he can do, Yelena becomes very protective of him and makes him stay behind her. He opens up to her about his "episodes" and that he has them every so often, but does not recall the events after he is recovered. They find a high exit point and try to climb it while linked together. While they are successful in leaving, the STRIKE team tries to ambush them, ordered by Val. When all the others locate a truck and try to leave, Bob distracts them and is shot. However, he survives and the Sentry side of him allows him to fly into the air, before crashing back down to earth. It is revealed that he has been the only survivor of Project Sentry.

Valentina then takes Bob to the Watchtower where she manipulates him into using his powers. He explains that he chose to do the experiment in hopes to heal himself from the dark past he has had. With help from Val, Bob awakens his true powers and is officially given the title of Sentry and a new suit. Yelena, Red Guardian, Bucky, John and Eva all arrive back at New York and are welcomed by Yelena to the Watchtower, formerly known as Avengers Tower. Val introduces them all to Sentry and is tasked to take them all down. However, Bob refuses as they all helped him, especially Yelena. However, Val is able to manipulate him more and his Sentry persona takes over. He is successful in fighting them all and taking them down, which makes them leave. Not long after this, Sentry also attacks Val for what she has made him do, before he is stopped via fail-safe by her assistant Mel.

After Mel takes him down, Bob's Void persona takes over, which he won't remember. This persona starts wiping out citizens of New York, covering the city in inky blackness, and the Thunderbolts attempt to rescue civilians caught in the event. Despite their efforts, many are sucked into the void. Wherever the darkness touches, they are whisked away into their own terrible memories. Desperate to save Bob from himself, Yelena walks into the Void and into endless rooms of her own painful recollections, until she eventually finds Bob. The real Bob, having locked himself away as the Void went about taking over the city. In this room, he is reliving the moments in which he and his mother were abused by his father, but claims it's the "safest one". With help from Yelena and the Thunderbolts, who fight their way through their own rooms of torment to find her, Bob revisits the lab where he first got his powers. They encounter the Void at the moment of his creation, and he restrains all except for Bob in order to torment him further and prove his superiority. While everyone is tied up by the Void, Bob fights the darkness that lives inside him and tries to destroy it. Yelena and the others free themselves and run to his side, embracing him and assuring him he's not alone, and that they care. This is the boost he needs to come out of both his Sentry and Void personas, and New York is restored to lightness. John congratulates Bob on fighting the Void, but he has no recollection of the event, clearly meaning his mind has been wiped once more.

The Thunderbolts are praised by the public at a live news cast, where Yelena reveals she has been working to form a new group of heroes and was secretly putting them together, officially calling them the New Avengers, which Bob/Sentry/Void is now an official member of.
