Demetrio Lopez Garcia, better known as Sergeant Garcia, is a character from the Disney television series Zorro.
Background[]
Early life[]
Garcia was born in California, possibly Spain the in late 1780s. He appears to be in his late 20s, early 30s. At some point, Garcia enlisted in the Kings Military where he was eventually stationed at the Pueblo de Los Angeles. There, he met a young Don Diego de la Vega, and the two became friends. He is a bumbling but lovable soldier who is very proud of his military service, but not very good at it due to his cowardice, obesity and limited intelligence. He becomes Zorro's chief foil throughout the series not because he is evil, but because he is very motivated to capture Zorro for the reward money. He spends most of his free time eating, drinking and singing in the tavern with his good friends, Don Diego de la Vega and Cpl. Reyes.
Return of Don Diego[]
When Diego returned from university in Spain, Garcia was one of the first soldiers to greet him upon arrival.
Through fiercely loyal, Garcia makes it known to Don Diego his dislike of the new Commondante.
Relationships[]
Don Diego[]
Don Diego met Garcia sometime before he left to attend school in Spain, and the two became friends. Garcia looks up to Don Diego and often goes to him for advice, which Diego is more than willing to help with. He thinks of him as his best friend and trusts him completely. He unwittingly gives Don Diego secret military information which aids Zorro. Garcia has no idea that Don Diego is Zorro. And when other begin to suspect Diego, Garcia laughs and is the first to discredit the notion that his friend could be the masked outlaw.
Zorro[]
Though Garcia is always scheming to capture Zorro, their relationship becomes more playful and comic as they grow to respect each other. Garcia has no idea that Zorro is his friend, Diego.
