"Setting the Table" is the thirteenth episode of Monsters at Work. It premiered on April 13, 2024, and is the third episode of the second season.
Synopsis[]
Tylor is invited to a fancy dinner with Johnny Worthington, but it's on the same night — and at the same restaurant — as a party for Fritz!
Plot[]
After Sulley gives a terrible television interview, mainly because of Jill's strawman tactics, MIFT is reminded that Fritz's 40th work anniversary surprise party is coming up, even though Fritz already knows about it. Fritz explains that he has a surprise himself for everyone, which Duncan assumes is him announcing his retirement so that he can take over. The party is to be held at the Shrieky Tiki.
Tylor explains that he is unable to make it due to having other plans. While driving him home, Val demands to know what those plans are, and after some reluctance, Tylor admits that he is going to have dinner with Johnny Worthington, though he is unsure for what reason. Nevertheless, Val respects his decision as Tylor goes to meet with Johnny at Le Petit Grrr. As he sits with him, Tylor suddenly sees Fritz's entire party enter, with Val being the only person to notice.
Val explains that Roze found the cultural appropriation of the Shrieky Tiki distracting and thus had to change venues. Fritz ignorantly believes that Tylor is there because he somehow knew about the change. Val offers to help Tylor with keeping his dinner with Johnny separate from Fritz's party. During his back and forth, Tylor attempts to downplay Fritz's party while Johnny offers a position as a scarer at Fear Co., even offering him pay and a company car up front. Johnny grows increasingly suspicious especially when he sees through Val's waiter disguise.
Tylor eventually gets back to Fritz's party to quiet the karaoke music and urges Fritz to make his announcement. He reveals that he was simply going to cut back on cola, upsetting Duncan. As Tylor is about to leave, Johnny appears, but feigns being aware that Tylor was here, instead offering to have a real conversation with Sulley about their respective energy sources.
Later, Tylor has dinner with Val as Pierre, the waiter, urges them to leave soon (he hooked up with Roze). Tylor reveals to Val that Johnny had offered him a job, but that he did not give an answer. He notices a scare card of Johnny's father, he had previously shown it to him in good faith. Tylor wonders if Johnny left the card behind on purpose for him.
