Sha Wujing, better known as Sandy, is a minor character in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese.
Background[]
In most tellings, Sha Wujing, or Sandy, is portrayed as male and was once a royal curtain raiser, until he accidentally broke a vase and was reincarnated into a horrible sand demon (sometimes ogre, orc, troll, or hulk). He was later approached by Guanyin who offered him redemption and informed him about Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Tripitaka. After a brief misunderstanding, Sandy Joined their group for adventures. In the end, he achieves enlightenment and becomes a golden-bodies arhat.
Personality[]
Sha Wujing is shown to take her job seriously and appears to care a great deal for both Sun Wei-Chen and Sun Wukong. She is tough and determined, but possesses a protective spirit when meeting Wei-Chen and Jin Wang.
Physical appearance[]
Sha Wujing is depicted as resembling a relatively attractive young Chinese woman, a far cry from usual portrayals as a large balding, bearded man.
Powers and abilities[]
Sha Wujing is a well-adapt martial arts fighter, her main weapons appear to be a pair of small sickle blade weapons. She is shown to be very light and flexible when in battle against an enemy.
Trivia[]
- Sha Wujing did not appear in the original graphic novel, but her character is usually seen as a mainstay of the Journey to the West story.
- This portrayal of Sha Wujing is unique as she is a woman. Most adaptations depict her as a man.
