Shirley MacLaine is an American actress, singer, dancer, activist, and author of Canadian descent. For Disney, she played as Millicent Mirabeau in Carolina and Polly in Noelle. She is the older sister of Warren Beatty.
Known for her portrayals of quirky, headstrong, eccentric women, MacLaine is the recipient of numerous accolades including an Academy Award, two British Academy Film Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.
MacLaine made her acting debut as a teenager in Broadway musicals, such as Oklahoma!, Me and Juliet, and The Pajama Game. Following her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry, she would continue to work in many films, such as Around the World in 80 Days, Some Came Running, Ask Any Girl, The Apartment, The Children's Hour, Two for the Seesaw, Irma la Douce, Sweet Charity, Terms of Endearment, Rumor Has It, The Turning Point, Being There, Madame Sousatzka, Steel Magnolias, Postcards from the Edge, The Evening Star, Used People, Gambit, Guarding Tess, Bewitched, In Her Shoes, and Valentine's Day.
MacLaine received the 40th AFI Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 2012, and received the Kennedy Center Honors for her lifetime contributions to U.S. culture through the performing arts in the following year. She is known for her New Age beliefs, and has an interest in spirituality and reincarnation. She has written a series of autobiographical works that describe these beliefs, document her world travels, and describe her Hollywood career.
