"Shoes of Destiny" is the first segment of the second episode of The Weekenders. It premiered on March 4, 2000 alongside "Sense and Sensitivity".
Synopsis[]
Carver wants to stand beside the cool kids on picture day and his new shoes help him be "C.A.R.P."
Plot[]
Friday[]
As school lets out, Tino explains that Carver is obsessed with coolness to a fault. He shows a chart depicting Carver's brain which is mostly composed of coolness and pushes everything else to the side. When he gets with his friends, Carver reveals that for class picture day on Monday, he will be sitting with the Cool Kids so that he can be C.A.R.P. (cool and radically popular). The others are shocked by this declaration, especially since Carver has tried to hang with the cool kids for years to no avail. Carver openly admits that for him to accomplish this, he needs to throw everything away.
At the mall, the gang go looking for something for picture day when they run into the Cool Kids, Bree and Colby. Tino explains to the audience that they willingly drown out what they consider not cool, including them. Just then, Carver spots a pair of flashy shoes and buys them to improve his coolness. Just as the gang agrees to this, Tino comes to the realization that this could lead to Carver abandoning them in favor of being with the Cool Kids permanently. Tino heads home where he tells his mother about his insecurities, but Mrs. Tonitini tells him that Carver will never give up being friends with him, even if it is temporary.
Saturday[]
Tino, Lor, and Tish decide to do everything they can to improve Carver's image, including watching how the Cool Kids stand and act, picking the proper clothing ware for the occasion, and even ensuring that they have perfectly captured the exact measurements. With everything coming together perfectly, Carver unveils his new look which is well received by everyone.
Sunday[]
Tino, Lor, and Tish watch from afar as Carver successfully integrates himself with the Cool Kids. Soon, Lor and Tish come to the same conclusion that Carver might leave them, but Tino tells them that they need to respect his decision.
Carver ends up spending most of the day with the Cool Kids and comes to the realization that their lifestyle mainly consists of leaning against things and not doing anything, while also mocking those they consider beneath them. When Tino, Lor, and Tish come to a restaurant to eat, Bree and Colby mock them, but Carver finally breaks off and decides to rejoin his old friends, cutting things off with the Cool Kids. Carver admits that he prefers his old life with his old friends, though Tino predicts that Carver will forget this lesson. They realize that they still have homework to finish and rush off.
The following day, they take a photo with Carver being with his real friends, and Lor giving Tish bunny ears (based on a comment she made earlier).
