Simon Doyle is a character featured in the 2022 mystery film Death on the Nile based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. He is portrayed by American actor Armie Hammer.
Background[]
He is the husband of Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle, a wealthy English heiress who is murdered on a cruise ship in Egypt. Simon was previously engaged to Jacqueline de Bellefort, Linnet's friend, who introduced him to Linnet in order to help him find a job. However, Simon and Linnet fell in love and eloped, leaving Jacqueline heartbroken and vengeful. Jacqueline follows Simon and Linnet on their honeymoon and shoots Simon in the leg, making him a suspect in Linnet's murder.
However, it is later revealed that Simon and Jacqueline were still in love and plotted to kill Linnet together. They staged the shooting to divert suspicion from themselves and hoped to inherit Linnet's fortune. Their plan is foiled by Hercule Poirot, a Belgian detective who happens to be on board the ship. Poirot exposes their guilt and confronts them with the evidence. Simon and Jacqueline then commit suicide by shooting each other, rather than face justice.
Simon Doyle is a complex and duplicitous character who appears to be a charming and loyal husband but is actually a cold-blooded murderer and a manipulative lover. He is willing to sacrifice his own happiness and reputation for money and passion. He is also shown to be cunning and resourceful, as he manages to deceive most of the passengers and crew on the ship, as well as Poirot for a while. However, he ultimately fails to escape Poirot's keen observation and deduction skills.
