The Singing Chickens[1] are characters featured in the 1934 Silly Symphony short Funny Little Bunnies.

Background[]

Physical appearances[]

The hens come in a variety of colors consisting of black, brown, and yellow colors resembling leghorn chickens with the one commanding them having a plumage of hazel around her body. Although identical, they each have a distinguished handkerchief and bowties so as to give them different appearances. The hen commanding the other six hens wears a blue bonnet around her head, a light blue bow on her neck, and a pink handkerchief.

Role in the short[]

The hens are seen been instructed by a blue hen wearing a bonnet as the bunnies are preparing for Easter. As the lead hen instructs the others to lay their eggs by clucking in rhythm, she conducts the black, brown, and yellow hens (each laying one egg) first with the leader being the last laying two eggs at once. Upon repeating this one more time, she conducts the hens on the left to cluck twice. She then repeats the same strategy to the ones on the right as well and as she repeats, the lead hen lays more eggs while clucking rhythmically. However, after she pauses, the hens cluck all together, laying more eggs at once, which slide down the chutes and land onto one of the bunnies' pot, where they work together to get the eggs ready for Easter. They do not appear afterwards.

Trivia[]

  • The clucking effects of the hens were provided by Florence Gill. Additionally, the scene featuring the hens was animated by Dick Huemer.[1]
  • The hen wearing a blue bonnet directing the other hens has a slight resemblance to the Wise Little Hen even having the same voice actress (the cartoon was released three months before the Wise Little Hen's debut).
  • Located on the nest where the lead hen is perched is a blue ribbon with a gold medal decorated on it, hinting that she may have won an award for being a prized hen for best egg quality.
  • The black plumage hens are the only hens seen in Funny Little Bunnies who do not wear bowties around their neck, unlike most of them seen in the short.
