"Space Cadet" is the first segment of the thirtieth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
Gretchen gets a letter from NASA, telling her that she will be involved in the next space shuttle mission.
Plot[]
Gretchen gets a letter from NASA telling her that she will receive an award due to a project she entered in a competition. Convinced that this means that she will be the first kid in space, T.J. decides to prep her for outer space. The Gang recreate various test simulations that the astronauts endure when heading into space, but Gretchen noticeably becomes more tired and disheveled from T.J.'s attempts at trying to "help" her. She finally gets fed up, believing that he is not taking it seriously, but he tells her that he had always dreamed of going into space himself and the two have a break.
Everyone heads to the auditorium for Gretchen's award except for T.J. Buzz Aldrin comes out and awards Gretchen with a commemorative coin. Confused, Buzz explains that she is not going into space because she is "just a kid". T.J. arrives and accuses Aldrin of crushing every kid's dream of space travel, but he explains that it is not Gretchen going into space, but her experiments. Realizing what all this was about, Gretchen, T.J. and the rest of the school celebrate as her ideas will be used by NASA. Gretchen decides to fulfill T.J.'s wish by having them take his hat into space with them.
