This article is about the spacecraft. For DuckTales episode of the same name, see The Spear of Selene!.
The Spear of Selene was a spaceship that appeared in the reboot of DuckTales. It was designed and piloted by Della Duck and built by her uncle Scrooge McDuck.
Background[]
After Scrooge McDuck and his nephew and niece, Donald and Della had gone on adventures and collected treasure from everywhere in the world, Della began thinking of exploring the greatest uncharted territory: outer space. She drew up plans for a spacecraft she named the "Spear of Selene," after the Greek goddess of the moon and a personal friend of hers.
Donald was strictly against the idea, especially because she had three eggs about to hatch, but Scrooge went behind his back and had the ship built, planning to surprise his niece with it after her children were born. However, Della discovered her surprise early after being tipped off by Bradford and decided to take it for a "test run" in orbit, and she ended up flying into a cosmic storm. Scrooge attempted to guide Della through it via radio, but the ship got struck by a bolt of lightning, and she, nor the ship, were ever seen or heard from again.
Role in the series[]
The ship was mentioned by name in "Woo-oo!" when Donald calls out Scrooge for lying to him and taking his nephews on a dangerous adventure, shouting "This is the Spear of Selene all over again!" with Scrooge reminding him he wasn't responsible.
In "The Great Dime Chase!", Dewey and Webby find a secret room in the McDuck archive that is full of materials related to Della. They discover, framed on the wall, a note from her to Scrooge saying that she took the Spear of Selene, which makes them wonder if Della had betrayed her family and stole something from Scrooge.
In "The Spear of Selene!", Dewey and Webby arrange for the Sun Chaser to crash-land on Ithiquack so they can sneak into Selene's temple and hopefully find answers about Della or the "spear" she took. They meet Selene herself, who tells them she never owned a spear, and they conclude that the "Spear of Selene" must be something else.
In "The Secret(s) of Castle McDuck!", Huey, after Dewey tells him about his investigating, rubs the lead from his pencil on the back of Della's note to reveal hidden information about the ship, including a drawing of it.
In "The Last Crash of the Sunchaser!", the boys and Webby reconstruct a torn picture of Scrooge in front of the ship and, following a tense chase, Dewey confronts Scrooge to tell him about his mother and Spear of Selene, which he does. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Scrooge launched an effort to find Della and had a fleet of similar-looking rockets built for his search party to go into space with. But, like Della's ship, they never returned, and Scrooge was forced to end the search when it was proving costly and futile to continue.
At the end of "The Shadow War!", it is revealed that the ship had crashed on the moon, and that Della had set up camp in hopes of reestablishing contact with her family.
In "What Ever Happened to Della Duck?!", Della attempted to use the Spear of Selene to brave her way through a cosmic storm. While Scrooge tried to call Della back, a lightning bolt hit the rocket and sent it spiraling down to the Moon. For untold years, Della has survived using the Spear of Selene as a shelter and using Gyro's Oxy-Chew gum to keep herself from suffocating. Her attempts to get an SOS end in failure when the Moon Mite ate away at the distress signs. For her backup plan, Della hoped to restore the Spear of Selene to running capability. At first successful, Della found out she needed gold to fuel the rocket and nearly went over the edge from the time spent on the Moon.
In "The Golden Spear!", Della finally gets the rocket repaired and returns to Earth. Donald, who's about to go on a cruise, sees it and runs to it. By then, Della has gone to McDuck Manor. Donald gets in the ship and accidentally starts it up, sending him into space.
In the next episode, Donald ends up on the Moon and is taken prisoner by the Moonlanders and Lunaris and once again, the ship is destroyed.
In "What Ever Happened to Donald Duck?!", as Donald is transported to the prison of the moon, there were a lot of ships similar to the Spear of Selene.
In "Moonvasion!", Penumbra manges to reactivate the ship and uses it to stop Lunaris' ship from destorying Earth.
In the series finale, "The Last Adventure!", it is revealed that Bradford Buzzard was the one who told Della about the Spear of Selene in order to make Scrooge give up on adventuring.
