"Spider-Sprig" is the first segment of the forty-seventh episode of Amphibia.

Determined to make his mark on Earth, Sprig becomes a superhero.

Mr. Boonchuy shows his favorite movie Tarantu-Lad to Anne and the Plantars. Everyone is disinterested in it, except for Sprig who empathizes with the main character. He believes that he can perform similar daring acts, but Anne tells him that he needs to hide from the public as no one will accept him, even if he tries to do good. As he tunes out Polly's critique of the film, Sprig takes it upon himself to become a superhero. He settles on a frog theme and creates a flashy costume to become Frog-Man. Polly immediately accuses him of simply doing it to seek attention, but he insists that he is seeking justice and leaps out into the streets of San Francisco.

Sprig encounters an older man named Robert Otto who claims to be the neighborhood's protector, though the kids find him a nuisance. Suddenly, a runaway school bus careens down a hill and both Sprig and Robert hop into action to stop it. Robert fails to do anything helpful, but Sprig manages to stop the bus with his tongue; pleasing the citizens as well as Molly Jo, Robert's granddaughter, who was one of the passengers on the bus. Sprig continues to help people all over the city and hits the news, which Anne and Polly angrily see. Robert grows jealous when he finds Cloak-Bot's arm at his junkyard. Impressed with it, he decides to use it to get revenge on "Frog-Man".

While receiving adoration, Sprig is attacked by the newly powered Robert and they proceed to wreck havoc across the streets of Los Angeles. After saving Molly Jo from harm's way, much to Robert's gratitude, she chastises the two of them for causing so much damage. Realizing that he was in it for the fame, Sprig and Robert use their abilities to clean up the town. Sprig then tells her that he is happy that he talked some sense into them and leaves, though Robert is told he will most likely get arrested, which he accepts. Sprig returns home with the intent to toss his suit away, but is caught by Anne. He apologizes for what he did and she in turn compliments his outfit, only to learn that he used her clothes to make it.

Additional Voices

  • Lead character designer Andy Garner-Flexner is seen in the crowd admiring Sprig's heroism.

  • Robert Otto uses Cloak-Bot's intact right arm, which self-destructed after Anne kicked it into the sky in "Anne-sterminator".
    • The junkyard that Otto owns is also the same one, where Cloak-Bot pursued the Boonchuys and Plantars in the same episode.
  • Emily (the orange-haired girl wearing a pink cat shirt and blue hat who had a larger role in "Adventures in Catsitting") was among the citizens that observed the damage from Sprig and Robert's battle.

  • The episode's title, as well as the episode as a whole, is an obvious reference to the Marvel Comics hero Spider-Man. Sprig creating the slime to climb the wall as well as his costume making montage is taken from the original Spider-Man movie.
  • Molly Jo is a reference to Mary Jane Watson.
  • Robert Otto's name, as well as his use of a robotic limb, could potentially be a reference to Spider-Man antagonist Doctor Octopus, otherwise known as Otto Octavius.
    • The Robert part of his name may also be a reference to another Brad Garrett role, Robert Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond.
  • Among the costume designs that Sprig makes includes Piccolo's classic outfit from Dragon Ball.
  • Tarantu-Lad's appearance resembles Kamen Rider 1 from the 1971 television show of the same name.
  • The pizza man resembles Mario from the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
