Spike is a character featured in the 2000 Disney live-action film Whispers: An Elephant's Tale.
Background[]
Personality[]
Spike is shown to be an independent elephant matriarch who leads her own herd. She is shown to be a good friend of Half Tusk, especially when it comes to her weight that she had ever since she led her herd across the African savanna. Despite this, she is also shown to be fearful when Groove got separated from the herd, leaving her in worry, showing that she is fearful of poachers stalking the herd. She is also shown to be worried when she found out that Groove got separated from Half Tusk, having no idea of what the latter did to her sister.
Role in the film[]
During the conversation between Half Tusk and her teenage daughter Princess, her mother approaches Spike, happy to see her in the herd. Spike asks Half Tusk if she ate a lot, which the latter denies. She later replies to Half Tusk that according to her herd, she can "never be overweight or too gray". Just before Half Tusk leaves, Spike asks her of where Groove, noticing that she is not present in the herd, thinking that she could have been separated with poachers everywhere - stating that her info is always correct. Half Tusk replies to Spike that she did everything she could, telling her to find Groove and keep her safe, just as Spike walks with her own herd. Spike is last seen telling her herd about what Half Tusk did to her Groove, having no idea that Half Tusk had whiskers on her face. She does not appear again afterwards.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown how Spike became the matriarch of her own herd in the first place.
- Despite her small amount of screen time in the film, Spike's voice actress Joan Rivers was advertised in a 2001 home video trailer for Whispers during the "Featuring the voice talents of" narration by Mark Elliott, which was used to promote the film's release on home video.
