"Spinelli's Masterpiece" is the first segment of the forty-eighth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Spinelli lets off some steam by creating a chalk drawing, and T.J. does everything he can to keep Miss Finster from erasing it.

Plot[]

While playing basketball, Spinelli is blocked by Lawson, angering her into nearly attacking him. The rest of the Gang calm her down, as Lawson's move was legal, and tell her that she needs to vent her anger someplace else. Spinelli nearly destroys some chalk belonging to Cornchip Girl who was drawing something on the blacktop. Spinelli critiques her drawing and then proceeds to draw something else. The next day, Cornchip Girl informs the rest of the Gang that Spinelli has been drawing non-stop and they go on top of the jungle gym to see that Spinelli is in the midst of drawing an incredible mural.

The Gang begin to invite other kids to the top of the jungle gym to see and everyone is amazed and moved by what she is drawing. When they see Lawson and the rest of the fifth graders about to play, the Gang invite them up to the top of the jungle gym and they too fall for the art's magnificence. Soon, the viewing of Spinelli's art becomes an event as more kids, including Menlo, go to the top to see as well as students from an alternative art school. Miss Finster sees all the children gathering and without a second thought announces her intent to wash away Spinelli's art, much to everyone's horror.

With the help of the Pale Kids, T.J. sends the word out about Spinelli's art as everyone fights over the water hose. Suddenly, art critic and teacher Collette Découpage arrives via a helicopter to announce her intent to not only look over Spinelli's art, but to invite her to attend her prestigious art school. Spinelli announces that she is finished and everyone rushes to the top of the jungle gym and see her final work, wowing everyone including Miss Finster. As they announce their intent to laminate the blacktop, the water hose suddenly bursts and washes away the artwork. Spinelli is confused by everyone's reaction and states that now she has vented she wants to return to playing.

Trivia[]

  • According to T.J., the coordinates for the school are 40.5 N, 80 W which would put it somewhere near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, the map shows the setting is near Illinois and some episodes imply that it is set in Arkansas.
