Star vs. the Forces of Evil: Deep Trouble is a comic mini-series based on the television cartoon of the same name, published by Joe Books. They were written by one of the show's board artists, Zach Marcus, and illustrated by character designer, Devin Taylor.[1]

Although the comic was intended to be an 8-issue mini-series (with its story taking place at an undefined point early in the show's second season), only four issues ever saw print, with the remaining four never coming out due to poor sales. As a result, the cliffhanger of the comic's story will never be resolved.

Synopsis[]

After receiving an all-powerful magic wand for her 14th birthday, Star is sent by her Royal Parents to live with the Diaz family on Earth. Follow the fiercely awesome teen princess Star Butterfly on brand new, interplanetary adventures in this all-new, original comic series.

Plot[]

Parley with Pony[]

While Star is updating her mother Moon on the recent happenings at the Diaz household, Marco enters asking if she has seen his hoodie. She hangs up on her mother and admits that she took it, though she is unsure where it is due to the mess. After summoning kitten maids to clean her room, Marco finds a pile of messages in bottles from the Waterfolk Domain. Star reads one of the letters and learns that they are from Pony Head and that she is in trouble. She opens a portal with her Dimensional Scissors and two leave right away to help her.

The Waterfolk City is covered with graffiti and trashed and there are signs stating that the Pearled Tiara had been stolen, with Pony Head as the culprit. Star says that that is not like her, but Marco begs to differ. They visit her in her holding cell where she claims that she does not remember what happened last night, but that she knows for a fact that she did not do any of the things she has been accused of. As Star and Marco leave, they are confronted by Johnny Blowhole who has become an attorney and will represent Pony Head in court.

However, it quickly becomes apparent that J.B. was lying about his attorney status and that he was "dared" into becoming one. The shark prosecutor provides enough evidence that apparently supports Pony Head's guilt and J.B. immediately switches sides while Pony Head is restrained after trying to attack him. Star steps in as the attorney and manages to provide evidence to support Pony Head's innocence, such as how she writes her S's and not using older style purses such as the one used to hide the Pearled Tiara. The Judge decides to reopen the case and tasks Star and a very reluctant Marco to solve it, or else they too will be imprisoned with Pony Head.

Pony Head cannot provide any information to Star as "time is like a blur". Giving Star an idea, she grabs Marco and runs off.

Ole Moon River[]

Marco tries to remind Star that she does not know time travel magic, which she admits, but reminds him that they do know Father Time and go to visit him in his dimension. They offer to take control of his time wheel and giant hamsters while he relaxes, something he agrees to as he has never experienced the concept of boredom, which excites him. They proceed to travel to the past, which simply involves going in reverse and they end up in the far distant past of Mewni.

Star and Marco spy on preteen Moon, River and a young handsome prince named Dirt. River is attempting to impress Moon with his adventuring ways, but only succeeds in humiliating himself and making Dirt look better by comparison. As River sulks, Star pretends to be a tree to give him romantic dating advice which he takes to heart. However, he continues to humiliate himself throughout the day with Star and Marco following them the whole time.

At night, Star and Marco decide to follow Dirt and discover that he is a member of the Mud Dwellers disguised as a Mewman. He plans to kill Moon so that his people will take over Mewni. Dirt returns to kill Moon, but Star and Marco arrive in battle armor to fight him. They chase Dirt away and River arrives to help. Moon, not realizing the situation, thwarts Star and Marco, but River rescues them and unmasks Dirt's true identity. Realizing what had happened, Moon apologizes to Star and Marco who make a hasty exit and return the time wheel to Father Time.

Star and Marco return to the house when the former begins to eye the Magic Instruction Book and opens to Glossaryck.

Glossy Knows Best[]

Glossaryck once again speaks in frustrating riddles and non-sequiturs, frustrating Marco. Star however manages to convince him to help them find a way to save Pony Head and he has Star perform a chant that sends her and Marco into what appears to be a sitcom style living room. They are greeted by Glossaryck in housewife clothing named Momssaryck and baby version of him who refer to Star and Marco as "cousins" who have come to visit Glossaryck who is her husband and in his "Dad Cave". However, when Glossaryck or anything outside their world is mentioned, Momssaryck and any other inhabitant suddenly speak in an intimidating tone.

Star and Marco soon meet Neighssaryck, the friendly nerdy neighbor, and Teen Girlssaryck who is looking for a date and ignores Neighssaryck in favor of Marco who is grossed out. Star attempts to get information from Momssaryck, but she continues to talk in an intimidating tone, upsetting Star who takes Marco and decides to enter the Dad Cave, only for all the family members to combine into one disgusting inhuman blob creature.

Star and Marco escape through the Dad Cave door and find that they are backstage behind a sitcom set. They find Glossaryck's dressing room and see that he is on the phone with his agent "Liz". He casually waves the family away back to the set before bluntly telling Star and Marco to check Pony Head's phone for clues and sends them back. Star then attempts to talk in an intimidating tone which she admits is fun.

Cat's Pajamas[]

Star and Marco return to Pony Head to see how she is doing. When asked where her compact phone is, she admits that she lost it in the Dimension of Cats with Human Faces. When they return to Star's room, they are surprised to see Ferguson and Alfonzo digging through her things. They admit that they visit their house when they are away on adventures and even walk the Laser Puppies for them. Undeterred, Star and Marco attempt to wear a two person cat costume, but cannot walk straight. Alfonzo and Ferguson agree to teach them, on the condition that they come along too.

Upon arrival, they immediately go to see the Cats with Human Faces' leader Cashew, the Ruler of Purrkistan. When Star presents them with her own compact, the cats identify it as "another God-egg" and take them to see the other one. However, Marco's allergy to cats begins to act up and he sneezes loudly just as Star tries to swipe the compact. In the middle of the chaos, Alfonzo and Ferguson accidentally release the Laser Puppies, having brought them as well, and they take the opportunity to escape.

Rushing back to Pony Head, she nonchalantly admits that she upgraded her phone recently and that all her old photos were downloaded onto the new model, essentially making their recent adventure completely pointless. Pony Head apologizes, claiming that she had the "deep sea crazies". Star looks at the recent selfies and finds that one of them is the Goblin Dog food stand.

The comic ends with Pony Head's trial unresolved.

Trivia[]

  • When Star and Marco travel through time, they enter a tunnel full of various floating clocks. Marco comments "This is looking a lot like those TV shows." In Milo Murphy's Law, this is exactly how the time tunnels are depicted, though the clocks were humorously left behind by Vinnie Dakota and Balthazar Cavendish.
  • Marco is revealed to be allergic to cats, something which is never brought up in the series.
  • When Ferguson and Alfonzo proceed to take numerous selfies of the cat dimension, Star comments, "they wonder why we stopped inviting them". This would give an in-universe explanation as to why the two appeared less often in season two; Star and Marco were just tired of having them around.
  • While unresolved, the last four issues gave an indication of what might have followed. Issue# 5 would have most likely centered on Marco facing off against the Goblin Dog vendor; Issue #6 would see Star and Marco entering a race and meeting up with Buff Frog and his children; Issue #7 would feature Star, Marco (in his Blood Moon Ball costume), and Pony Head lacking her horn go to a wild west town and face off with a beaver; and Issue #8 would have the heroes caught in the middle of a war between the Pony Head clan and the Waterfolk.
  • It can be safely assumed that the comic is non-canon with the rest of the series.
